The Northern Hawk Owl first reported by Lori Charron (below) was still present this afternoon in the same area she described. It was not present in the morning, but in the afternoon it was easily seen from the road. Mark Suomala, Chris Borg, Dylan Jackson, and I drove up together and were very happy to find the bird on our second visit in the afternoon after missing it in the morning. Thanks to Diane Seavey for trying to find us and for Ann Forsythe for keeping us posted on the (lack of) Brambling reports despite people looking.

Subject: [NHBirds] Northern hawk owl in Pittsburg!
A northern hawk owl is visiting in Pittsburg NH! Thanks to Aubrie Giroux for the heads up on this bird! The owners of the home the bird is hanging around was not home to chat with. If you go see the bird please do not park in driveway or enter the property. Please observe the bird from the rd. The bird is being seen on the telephone wires and the tall soft wood trees behind the home. Here are directions to see the bird. The bird is on Hall Stream rd. Please park on one side of the road as the road is narrow. Also the school bus drives up this rd. Binocs, or scope may be needed. This rd is a dead end.
To get to Hall Stream Rd, From Rt 3 heading towards Pittsburg cross into VT taking Bridge St, followed by a right at flashing light, after crossing small bridge, Hall Stream is on the left (the road starts in VT and then turns to NH). About 4.5 miles down the road is old barn and almost 90⁰ turn in road. Once you see White Branch Rd on the right the barn is coming up. This is a dirt road and heavily rutted/muddy. 4wd recommended. Hall Stream is a dead end (map and gps may say otherwise), limited cell service in this area.
Happy Birding!
Lori
