Some pretext on Jean Mullen’s Osprey report below …
In early May, Jeremy Fennell of Eversource reported that Ospreys were building a new nest on a distribution pole just off I-95 at Exit 3 on the edge of the Great Bog in Portsmouth. The nest-building had caused a power outage that their crews quickly addressed, but this was not a long-term solution to the problem. After consulting with several natural resource agencies, Eversource moved the nest to an adjacent abandoned pole that was about 100 feet away and taller than where the nest had originally been. After the nest was moved, the adult Ospreys went right to it. Given Jean’s observation, it sounds like the effort has paid off!
Late July is a great time to visit your local Osprey nest and count the number of young present before they begin to fledge. Data can go into eBird or can be sent to me at NH Audubon.
