A big challenge for NGWA’s Public Awareness Department has always been to increase NGWA members’ involvement in raising public awareness about groundwater and water wells. The messages we emphasize are groundwater protection, proper well location and construction, regular well maintenance, and water testing and treatment, if necessary. Through articles, advertisements, workshops and by providing public awareness tools, we’ve consistently encouraged members to get involved.

I’m curious, with National Ground Water Awareness Week just around the corner (March 7-13), is anyone planning to do anything to raise public awareness? If so, why and what?  If not, why?

We will be part of a Natural Resources Expo on March 12-13, which will include exhibits on groundwater supply and protection.  As we have the past few of years, we intend to distribute copies of the NGWA Groundwater Awareness Week flier about well testing, customizing it with our contact information.

The Pennsylvania Groundwater Association (PGWA) has a booth at the Pennsylvania Ag Progress Days every year in August.  The event is held in the State College Area on lands of the Penn State University.  Go Penn State and Joe Paterno!!!  We have at least two working models of the Water Cycle at the show.  Children especially are very enthusiastic about playing with the models.  Some are first time learners of the Water Cycle.  Others tell us they learned about it in school.  And some tell us they were here last year and could not wait to come again to see our booth and play again.  Ag Progress Days attracts some 45,000 people from all walks of life in the three-day exhibition.  The farmers are very receptive to the information we present in our brochures and how we present our program.  They fully realize how important groundwater truly is.  It is a lot of fun for the members of the PGWA to do the show each year.  We are spreading the word on groundwater.
