Greetings,

We are currently working together with UNICEF on a Code of Practice for Cost-Effective Water Well Drilling. This aims to raise the level of professionalism in water well drilling programmes in sub-Saharan Africa.  As part of this work we are trying to find a good, open source, rig information management system for National Governments, NGOs and private enterprises working in Africa.  Such a system would comprise a fairly simple database which enables information regarding rig utilisation, maintenance and repair to be recorded, stored and analysed.

My question is whether any of you know of such a system, or could put me in contact with someone who could help.

Thanks, and looking forward to hearing from you.

Warm wishes,

Kerstin

A group of NGWA volunteers is working to develop a similar tool to the “code” you describe.  We will forward your contact information to the lead on this NGWA project. Perhaps collaboration would be appropriate?

NGWA has a db of organizations, primarily U.S.-based, that report they have water well programs for low-income nations.  We’ve tried from time to time to get them to answer fundamental questions about their work and their resources.  This information can be found at: http://www.ngwa.org/PROGRAMS/links/intlwork.aspx

I suspect that many water well drilling businesses have some sort of rig information system that they use for their commercial operations.  Your posting may cause one or more of them to respond.

Our publication archives may have some articles related to rig information management.  You can search our web site by using the search tool found in the upper right hand corner, or you can go directly to the online archives found within the Web site.  I’ll look through an off-line db we also have.

Try some of the rig manufacturers, GEFCO in Enid, Oklahoma, USA comes to mind.  If they don’t have one, certainly they could help with the information necessary to create your own.  It’s really a matter of good drilling efficiency, project management and following the critical path (aka:  keeping the bit on the bottom), so I’m sure it’s out there.  Anybody who makes a big business out of drilling should be doing this.  So I guess Halliburton and Schlumberger would also be experts in that field.
