The NGSS writers very intentionally did NOT use the word inquiry or the phrase "scientific method" when they defined the practices. The practices represent a "fundamental shift" away from the notion of a scientific method (as described in textbooks). Why is this important? What strategies can we use to break the "stranglehold" that textbook definitions of the scientific method have on the teaching of science?
