@Vincent Otuonye, here we go again with these tribalism. I think you are just over reacting because the names of this robbers happened to suggest eastern decent. When Kola wrote "The come to Lagos", everybody comes to Lagos. In fact, I will bet over 99 percent of people residing in Lagos are not descendants of Kosoko, Williams, and Dickson.

The writer is just emphasizing that people come from other states and instead of seeking for honest living through hard work, they turn to criminal activities and what he/she is trying to discuss on these forum is WHY THEY DO IT. What pushes them to it? Is it pressure and money demand from home or is it ...? There is absolutely no reason to turn this conversation into another tribal assault.

Ayo,
You are compounding matters. Is crime exclusive to Lagos? No.
There is general insecurity in Nigeria.
Criminals are everywhere in Nigeria.
So, "they come to Lagos" is a very unfortunate comment.
By writing such, the writer has unwittingly cast an integrity question mark on all Igbo people in Lagos.
Any non-Nigerian reading that comment would easily link people of South-East origin residing in Lagos with criminality.
Don't make matters worse by defending it.
Please and please, we should be careful how we coin matters.
Let's be careful how we describe people.

@ Ayo, see you just made my point.

Even if we agree with you that the writer is emphasizing that people come from other states and instead of seeking for honest living through hard work, they turn to criminal activity, WHY SHOULD THE STATE THEY COME FROM MATTER TO THE WRITER? Especially when we're talking of citizens of the same nation - Nigeria. That is exactly what xenophobia means - fear and dislike of others?

@Vincent Otuonye

Even in any city in USA, syndicates of criminal activities with members of common racial background are usually referred to by their race and where they come from, e. g. the Mafia (Italians) from New England, Spanish (Cubans) from Miami, Arab from Detroit, Blacks from Philadelphia, Nigerians, Africans, etc. If in fact all the members of pickpockets admitted to be Igbo, then why not ask them where they come from and labeled them as such? We have read many stories about Area boys (Yoruba) and they are normally labeled by that name and where they come from. Hausa are well known for black market for money exchange and we know where they come from and where to trace some counterfeits. Those northerners who are destitute (panhandlers) and so with those from West (Yoruba panhandlers) were picked up; they were asked where they came from, and they were delivered to their states.

Because people of all races and nationalities flock to New York does not mean that the city is confiscated by a particular group or all groups in USA for criminal activities, thinking that there is no definition for nativity. This is from where endless confrontation and acrimony emanate, and if we don’t get rid of the paranoia and sensitive sentiment there may not be a way to nip in the bud all the ills that pervade our cities; be it Abuja, Lagos, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Kano, Jos, etc. The self-aggrandizement of we all own Lagos is not the best sentiment that is badly needed for peaceful co-existence. The vast density of New York still remained in racial neighborhoods and personification of class. Each person and race knows where it is safe to call his/her territory, and anybody can still live anywhere in New York in time of peace!

It is unnecessary to continue laying claim to Lagos in a circumstance that the safety of the city is threatened; and knowing that such taunt can easily touch the raw nerves of those who consider Lagos the only home base they have. The natives of Lagos know themselves, so as well as non-natives who have adopted Lagos as native land, also, know themselves. Each group is distinct in time of brawls and senseless confrontations. For any criminal activity that resembles the crime of these young men, it will always remain as Igbo criminal syndicate, Yoruba criminal syndicate, Hausa criminal syndicate, Ijaw criminal syndicate, etc., and by this term it will never connote the definition for xenophobia.

Wakilawal,
Quite incisive thoughts.
What about the chaps who have "come to Lagos" and done well for themselves and the country?
Must we define ethnic and racial nationalities by criminal profiles?
Can't we simply talk about criminals for who they are? When they engage in criminality, do they stay away from people of the same colour or ethnicity?
The quarrel with the original post was that reference to "they come to Lagos."
There are Lagosians, by whatever means identified, who are criminally inclined. What about them?
In the end, crime is evil and should be condemned, regardless of who the perpetrators are.

@ Lawal

Thanks for your response. I consider your email below cerebral but grossly misplaced. First stop comparing the US to Nigeria. The US is vastly advanced and their treatment of citizens and those that sojourn in their land is vastly different from how Nigerians treat citizens. An American can go to any state in the Union and, provided he meets the eligibility requirement, run for office in his new state without qualm. In the US, you see two brothers, George W and Jeb Bush run for governor of two different states (Texas and Florida) and won without qualm. Do you see such happening in Nigeria? So my friend, stop comparing US and Nigeria.

Now to the issue under discussion, note I did not attack the story that talked about these criminals. My angst is with how Kola characterize them. He, Kola wrote, they come to Lagos and this is what they do. Who is Kola to question them coming to Lagos. They have as much right as Kola to be anywhere in Nigeria they want to be. Please don't confuse that as me condoning their criminal activity.

Now let me ask you this question: If these criminals are Yorubas, honestly, do you anticipate Kola saying 'And they come to Lagos and this is what they do'? Do you see Kola saying so? I doubt Kola will say so even if we are told they are from Ogun, Oyo or Ondo.

Lawal, I need not say more. I have made my point. Have a good day.

Regards,

Since you are aware of the level of our civilization and politics is far less desired to American, I will expect you to dwell on the slow transformation of our constitution and political structure instead of defending criminality in a tribal subterfuge. Why not join others who channel their time to press for the actualization of constitutional right for residency? That will grab the attention of those at the helms of our affairs and will be more appreciated for the well-being of our peoples.

Truly, those young men should be ashamed of themselves. They should be held as bad eggs in the basket of good eggs. Lagos belongs to Lagos State and no longer the capital of Nigeria; and a case like that will be treated the same way Yoruba or Hausa or any other nationality of underworld in Abia State, Imo State, or any state in the federation when trapped down the way they found themselves.

What is the difference between Yoruba and Ogun, Oyo or Ondo. If we are told they come from a state majorly Yoruba, then their tribal identity is revealed. Anyway, we have to call a spade a spade, a spade, and a spade when we see one, regardless where they come from they are criminals who deserve to be exposed in public for making Lagos a dangerous city to live, move, and mix freely with others.

Vin, I mean it in a strong term; the background of the young men must be exposed.
