After discussing with Mr. Gandhi Swami founder of the Swami charitable trust via phone call, we have visited the Dharanee illam in Thirumazhisai. Initially we interacted with the kids to gain their attention and interest towards us. From the interaction we found that this trust was active for past 17 years. We also looked at the infrastructure of the home, they have an office room, one separate room for girls, one separate room for boys (Common TV and Computer where in boys room), Kitchen, store room, separate Toilets for boys and girls, and a separate room for old aged people with attached toilet.
Children have interacted with us and all of them where good in communication. All of them where keen to know things from us (primarily we discussed about career opportunities, before that we asked their aim and ambitions).
Then, we went to Mr. Gandhi Swami's residence where we met him and his wife Mrs.Vasantha Kumari (Managing Trustee of Swami Charitable trust). They told that this trust was established in 1995. We had a primary discussion with them and we accepted 3 things that we can do for them at present,
1. Setting up a small library with Story books & Comics (Since all the students are Tamil medium, we need to provide Tamil books) & we accepted to pay subscription for Tamil daily newspaper for one year (Initiating the habit of reading newspaper)
2. Conducting sessions on Computer, English, Science, General knowledge etc.
3. One day Social outing around Chennai with the kids.
After the discussion, Mr. Gandhi Swami asked us to continue our support at least for one year from this June.
Setting up Library :
All of you can collect Tamil story books, Tamil novels, Tamil Poetry books, Tamil Essay books, Tamil comics which can be useful for the kids from age range 5 to 18. (Books should convey something for the kids like Social, Natural, and Moral based things).
You can get new books, used books anything of that kind. Each one of you should provide at least 3 to 10 books. Convey this message to your friends and collect some books from them too.
(note : as many of the students are tamil medium, they are expecting tamil books as much as possible. Also, books with pictures depicting the stories.)
Already we have collected and buyed a set of books, it was given for review as well. Coming week (21/06/2014) we are going to initiate the same in the home. So, those who are willing to contribute the books or your valuable time can contact me as soon as possible.
Social Outing :
1. We have decided to conduct a session on space science and take the childrens to Birla Planetorium ( date will be decided )
2. We have decided to take the childrens for either Independence day parade/Republic day parade that will be conducted by Tamilnadu Govt. on Secratriat.
3. I have personally approached PRO's of OTA(Officers Training Academy, St.Thomas Mount), AFS(Air Force Station, Tambaram) through my friend for visiting on the display of passingout parade of battalions with the kids. This will be confirmed once i get approval from the PRO's.
Events :
We have a plan to conduct events of different themes every month. So, If you have any idea's in conducting events kindly let us know. We will be mailing the theme for the current month before 3 days of visit.

We reached Dharanee Illam by 10:30am, We had a initial discussion with Mr. Gandhi Swami founder of the Swami charitable trust. Then, Mr.Gandhi Swami called the students one by one and we had an interactive session with those students to know their reading skills on both TAMIL and ENGLISH. As a result we came to know that most of the students were not proficient in reading TAMIL and some students not able to recognize the alphabets in ENGLISH. Even an Eighth standard student is struggling to recollect English alphabets and spell simple English words.
Then the books provided for Library setup that has been recorded in a notebook where entries will be made when anyone borrow those books. We also listed the given books for our data.
Then we started interacting with the students directly and all students felt happy on hearing that we will spend full day with them. Initially the interaction started with the students by providing a paper individually to each of them and asked them to write the following in both ENGLISH and TAMIL
1. Name
2. Parent's name
3. School
4. Favourite Subject
5. Favourite Sports
6. Aim
Once the activity started, the students who were above class 5 were able to write in TAMIL but in ENGLISH with spelling mistakes, and the students below class 5 were unable to write their name in TAMIL. Everyone came up with doubts on writing in ENGLISH, The whole session went till 1:00 pm on making them understanding and writing in ENGLISH. Then we had lunch with them.
Post lunch session started with students by asking about what they want to know from us, We were asked to share some information on General Knowledge. During the session students of class 10 to 12 were not able to recognize our PRESIDENT, PRIME MINISTER and their roles and responsibilities so we gave all those information about them. Along with that we shared some information about our nation on states, union territories, neighboring countries etc...
Then we had a story telling session by issuing the books to students above class 5. Each students were asked to make entry in the record note created and was asked to follow the same regularly. One of the student has been given the responsibility to take care of the books and record entry. After getting the books students started reading the stories and we had a session to share the story which they read to all others. 6 members told the story which they read. Interesting thing is that a student of class 3 stood up voluntarily and told a story which was shared earlier.
Once the story telling session was over, we shared the plan for the next meet, where the activities are listed as follows
1. Each student should write the following clearly in ENGLISH and TAMIL.
a. Name
b. Parent's name
c. School
d. Favourite Subject
e. Favourite Sports
f. Aim
2. Each student should speak about themselves for at least 2 to 3 minutes.
3. Each student above class 5 should speak for 5 minutes about their favorite leader.
4. Each student above class 5 should read those books and should have a story telling session every weekend with the children below class 5.
5. One student should take responsibility to share daily news to other students during evening prayer.

Activities which are pending from our side is to provide subscription charge for the news paper.

Once the activity started children were eager to speak about themselves, after this activity, they had been provided with a paper and asked to write the same in it, as they did during our last visit. But still children of class 8 and 10 were committing mistakes while writing in TAMIL too. So some action points need to be taken to improve on their reading and writing skills.
Once the activity is done, we asked the children whether they have been shared the knowledge of those books by the students above class 8, provided during last visit (i.e) stories. So we asked them to tell some stories that has been recently shared. Once the activity started, children were eager to share the stories, 3 of them told some stories that has been shared to them. Then by 12:45pm children went for lunch.
Post lunch session started by 1:30pm, as children were eager to show their talent in CHESS, we were asked to play with them, and the same continued till 2:00 pm. Once the activity is done, we planned for next activity on ART and CRAFT works. So we divided the children into groups like above class 8 in one group and remaining children in another group.
Harini took responsibility to teach the ART and CRAFT work for students above class 8, and remaining children were asked to create face mask on their own. Initially we asked the children to pick their choices of masks which were animal faces and accordingly charts has been provided for the images to be drawn for masks.
Once the activity started, we guided those children in drawing the faces on chart and were asked to color the drawings, children started coloring those images and were eager to make it wear on their faces, Once the coloring has been done, we helped them to cut those images to make the masks.
The same way other group were making flowers and wall hangings individually. Finally, the children were happy with those works made by them. They wore the masks and started playing around the campus. Finally we had some photo session with the kids and the works done by them.
Next month Activities need to be planned, we need your valuable suggestions and ideas to improve this event.
