Super Bowl Sound FX: Football has never sounded better
NFL Network debuted the Super Bowl XLVI edition of its Sound FX show on Wednesday night, and it’s a tremendous opportunity for fans to see and hear the game as only the people on the field did on Sunday.
The show opens with Giants defensive endJustin Tuck firing up his teammates by singling out the ones who weren’t on the team four years ago and don’t have a Super Bowl ring and telling them, “It’s the best feeling in the world.”
The show also chronicles how Tom Brady and Wes Welker went from confident before the game to frustrated during it. Prior to kickoff Welker told TomBrady, “I’m open on every play.” Brady answered, “I know you are.”
But after Brady had two passes knocked down by Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, he said, “It’s like throwing in a forrest — those guys’ arms.”
After Brady and Welker misconnected on a pass that could have sealed the win for the Patriots, it was referee John Parry who said, “Whoa, that was the game.”
Discussions among the officials are some of the best moments of Sound FX. When umpire Carl Paganelli flagged the Giants for holding Vince Wilfork, Giants coach Tom Coughlin complained to Parry that it was a horrible call, and the NFL Films microphones caught Parry questioning Paganelli about whether he really had a good angle on it. It was too late to do anything about it, but Paganelli wanted to double-check, so he approached Wilfork during a break in the action and asked, did you really get held? That led to this exchange:
Wilfork: “No, that was a bad call.”
Paganelli: “Why didn’t you tell me that before I threw it?”
Wilfork: “Because for the ones you guys missed, I deserve one.”
Later, when Giants guard Chris Snee recovered a fumble only to have Wilfork jump into the pile after the fact and grab the ball, an official could be heard saying, “Nice try, Vince. He got it.”
Sound FX re-airs today at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Eastern and Saturday at 8 p.m. and midnight Eastern. No football fan will want to miss it.
