Dear Indian American community members,

You all are aware of the recent hate crimes committed against Indian Americans across the nation. These incidents in various parts of the country be it a racially motivated shooting incident, or verbal harassment, or vandalism have generated a great concern among the Indian Diaspora both first and subsequent generations for their safety and well-being.

Particularly, three major incidents in Kansas, Washington, and South Carolina where the victims were shot (two were dead and three were injured) caused a great anguish and concern in the community across the nation and also in India.  Apparently, the attackers have are misidentified the Indian Americans as middle eastern/Pakistani Muslims as revealed by their confessions in police interrogations.

Unifying and asserting our identity of Indian Americans not only in our engagement with our immediate communities, but also in the national political discourse has become increasingly important under the present circumstances. Highlighting the uplifting and peaceful nature our presence in the American socio economic landscape is required in order to educate the public and reassure the next generation of Indian Americans.

America has welcomed us for many decades. We are very much a part of the great American century and will be even bigger contributors to its future. Please join us along with your family and friends in a community organized Awareness Rally “March Against Hate Crimes” on Sunday March 19 at 1:00 PM in Lafayette Square Park, right in-front of the White House in Washington DC.
