Subject: For IRONBOUND playwright Martyna Majok, immigration is personal. Here's why.

Get to know this Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, and check out some exciting announcements from Forward, including our upcoming Game Night and our annual auditions.

Ironbound 101

Get to know Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok.

With the opening of Ironbound just two weeks away, it's time to brush up on the playwright whose voice animates this powerful story.

Martyna Majok is a Polish-American playwright whose work explores the grit, humor, and humanity of people on the margins of American life. She often gives voice to characters whose stories are rarely seen onstage, from working class immigrants to women navigating the push-pull between dreams and survival.

These two interviews with the playwright offer the perfect glimpse into her perspective and the personal experiences that directly inform her work.

Martyna Majok Shines a Light on the Invisible in 'Ironbound'

By Dominique Morisseau! (writer of Skeleton Crew, produced by Forward in 2018).

Dominique Morisseau and Martyna Majok met in New York City when Majok’s play Ironbound and Morisseau’s play Skeleton Crew were being read aloud for the first time. Both pieces feature strong female characters and center on work in factories. The playwrights admired each other’s work and have been in touch ever since.

Martyna Majok on Living Through Chernobyl, and Writing About Betrayal and Loss with Humor

The first theater the playwright saw live was Cabaret with John Stamos. She learned about the show from a pamphlet her mother brought back from a housekeeping job, and bought the ticket with money earned hustling at the pool hall.

"What I Ioved most was that the characters seemed like a family," she said.

Episode 124: Discussing Playwright Martyna Majok
w/ Directors Marcella Kearns & Jake Penner

Martyna Majok is one of America's hottest playwrights, and we're excited to experience two of her plays in Wisconsin during the 2025-26 season. We welcome Marcella Kearns and Jake Penner, two directors that have staged her work, to discuss Majok’s themes of survival, resilience, and connection.

They share what makes Majok’s plays hit so hard - and why directors are so drawn to her work. We talk about how her plays resonate personally, what challenges them, and why Majok’s stories feel more urgent than ever.
