You know that old story of Gretzky coming within an inch of being
traded to the Leafs instead of the Kings. Apparently he was even on
his way to the airport ready to board a plane to Toronto but the deal
turned around at the last minute.

I've read lots of accounts of Gretzky's trade to the Kings, but I've never
read anything concrete about that rumour. The closest thing I've read about
it was that it was honestly pitched to the Leafs, but in 1988, the Board of
Directors at the time thought they didn't need him to fill seats, as that
was happening anyway. Some things never change in Leaf Land!

I saw Wayne himself say it in an interview several years ago. He was
under the impression he had been dealt to Toronto. Apparently at the
last minute the Kings came up with a better offer, and the Leafs
screwed up again.

I've seen several interviews with Gretz about it...and he says he was
standing by the phone...and made sure McSorley was involved in the deal
before he agreed to it. I think that him goin to the leafs is just a
dream of Leaf fans ( not that it wouldve made THAT mush
difference....the leaf management wouldve fucked it up somehow)
