I need to get new glasses. Where is the best place in town to go to get
glasses? I would like to go somewhere with a large selection of glasses.
It also needs to be a place where I can get the glasses back within a week.
Any recomendations on where to go? It would be great if they also did the
eye exam onsite, but not necessary.

Thanks!

I've found Cowan's optical on Elizabeth avenue to be good, I've been going
there for a while now and the staff are friendly and helpful. There are 2
optometrists there as well.

I'm sure you mean a large selection of frames?

Generally I find optical dispensing outlets where you can get an
eye exam on site are not the best idea because often the person
doing the testing is not an optometrist but an optical
technician. The health of your eyes and your vision are too
important to entrust to people who are more interested in selling
eyeglass frames than properly correcting vision problems. Having
said that, I have heard good reports about the optical department
at Costco, apparently there is a qualified optometrist working there.

If you 'think' you need new glasses it's best to find out for
sure and to get the proper lens prescription. First see a
qualified optometrist there are many to choose from. If you are
in St. John's, one of the very best is Dr. Ian Henderson, 11
Rowan St (Churchill Square). Any qualified optometrist will give
you a lens prescription, if that's what you need, which you can
take to an optician of your choice.

That brings us to the core of your question, who is the best
optician in town. Assuming that by 'town' you mean St. John's,
there are many opticians and optical dispensing outlets. That
means that you are going to have to do some shopping and it is
wise that you do. I have dealt with only two in St. John's and
one in Kelligrews. The one in Kelligrews I would not recommend
because they seem to lack experience and sell cheap eyeglass
frames. I have dealt with Vogue and I find that they are
overpriced compared to quality of product and service. The one I
was most pleased with was Bense (formerly Gillard) optical at 100
Elizabeth Ave. Bense has a reasonable selection of good quality
eyeglass frames and the technicians who operate the business are
highly experienced.

Don't insist that your glasses be made in a week. Some lens
prescriptions cannot be produced in that time and any optical lab
that would try will probably not do the best job. It is the
lenses, not the frames, which are the most important to your
vision health, so don't rush it.

Those are my recommendations, do with them what you will.

I've been to a number of optical locations in St.John's such as Vogue,
Cowan's and that place on the corner of Blackmarsh Rd. and Topsail Rd.
but the best selection of frames I've seen is Pearle Vision in the
Avalon Mall. They carry frames such as the pricey designer frames all
the way to the more affordable options.

You likely won't get your frames back within a week, but a bit of
patience pays off well.

If you want an eye exam done, just look in the yellow pages for the
nearest optometrist to you. They are abundant in St.John's/Mount Pearl.

Why pay outrageous prices for eye ware. You are getting gouged if you
do. I get mine on-line at Zenni Optical ( www.zennioptical.com ).

I used to pay $500 for eye ware because of my prescription...now my eye
ware are around $40-$70 and $6 shipping. Doesn't matter if you order
one or 10 pair...it's still $6 to your door in about 2 weeks. More
styles than you can shake a stick at. Only problem I see is if you
must try them on before hand. I didn't care...I knew what they would
look like on me. Only thing I did was get my eyes checked by a eye Dr
and get fitted for glasses. Keep the numbers they give you for the
frames and your eye prescription and you're good to go.

Right now I have 4 reg pair and 3 pair of sunglasses. The quality is
great and the lense quality is also great. So what if it's non-branded
eye ware. Order is taken in California and shipped from China. Last
order was from Hong Kong.

Dominion on Blackmarsh Road. Maybe not the best frame selection in town, but
great prices and one of the best Opticians in the city.......... just ask
for Doris. And yes, they do eye exams as well, usually on Wednesdays. And,
they cut their lenses on-site for most orders.

For contacts, see Dr. Ian Henderson, Chruchill Square. Best Eye Doctor I
have dealt with in 25+ years of wearing glasses/contacts, and he also has a
small on-site Optical with a good frame selection.

Hope this helps.

Between my wife and I, we have gotten 7 or 8 pairs from
www.clearlycontacts.ca in the last year (including prescription sunglasses.
All pairs were designer frames and I never paid more than $50 per pair,
including lenses. All orders took no longer than a week to arrive. They
are located in Vancouver. The best part was that I could claim them all
under insurance! Before this, I was paying almost $400 for one pair here in
St. John's. Never again!
