WINNIPEG (CP) - A mistaken flip of a switch resulted in hundreds of
youngsters catching an eyeful of hard-core porn on the big screen following
a World Wrestling Federation feature at 17 Famous Players movie theatres
across Canada.
Parents were left scrambling for ways to explain the steamy scene to their
kids after a technician in Toronto made a mistake Sunday night.
"What an introduction to sex," a distraught Ivy Allaman said Monday after
her son viewed the torrid clip in a Winnipeg theatre. "The most he's ever
seen before is kissing."
Allaman was planning to talk to her children, aged eight and 11, about the
full frontal view - spread across a nine-by-18-metre screen with digital
surround sound - of a naked woman on her knees performing oral sex on a man.
After the special pay-per-view WWF showing - advertised as No Way Out (Let
the game begin) - the lights came up and the 420 mostly young viewers
gathered their coats and started filing out.
It was then that people started laughing and pointing at the screen, said
Paul Allaman.
"Some kids were screaming and stuff," he said. "Some were white as a ghost
and some adults were laughing.
"Our oldest one saw it, but I grabbed our youngest one right away and turned
him away."
The Allamans complained and were refunded the $69.96 they spent on the
tickets.
Colleen Allen of Langley, B.C., said she picked up her sons Curtis, 12, and
Travis, 11, after going to a movie and dinner with her mother and a friend.
"My 11-year-old was devastated," she said Monday. "Little girls were coming
out crying."
Allen, 37, said she complained to the theatre's staff.
Officials with Famous Players in Toronto were embarrassed and apologetic
Monday, but said the sizzling sex scene wasn't their fault.
Famous Players has a deal with Bell ExpressVu, a home satellite TV service,
and the WWF which allows the theatre to show the wrestling matches on its
screens.
Bell ExpressVu, a subsidiary of Bell Canada Enterprises, downloads the
satellite feed and transmits the program to the theatres.
Terry Snazel, ExpressVu's vice-president of technology, said a technician
responsible for programming the satellite signals messed up Sunday night and
accidentally switched over to Venus, an adult movie channel.
"It's totally the most terrible thing we could have done," Snazel said. "You
can't believe how upset we are."
The company is rewiring its system to permanently lock out all adult
stations, he said.
Famous Players spokeswoman Joanne Fraser said in Toronto that the three
companies met to discuss the goof and are now trying to persuade customers
it will never happen again.
"We sincerely regret this happened," said Fraser, noting Famous Players and
WWF received a written guarantee from Bell that such an error would never
occur again.
Bell ExpressVu has established a toll-free line - 1-877-991-9973 - where
customers can call to get an apology, find out how to get a refund and
receive free tickets to the next WWF showing April 30.

TORONTO, Feb. 28 /CNW/ - Bell ExpressVu today issued a statement of
apology to guests who attended the pay-per-view WWF event, "No Way Out" on
the
evening of February 27th at selected Famous Players theatres. The company
takes full responsibility for the error, which occurred after the WWF event
had concluded. It happened because of a switching error, which caused a
brief
transmission of programming intended for adult audiences. The company
sincerely regrets that this incident occurred and has taken the necessary
action to ensure that it will never happen again by rewiring the switching
facility.
Bell ExpressVu will reimburse the guests of Famous Players who attended
this event and has also offered this group complimentary tickets for the
next
WWF event scheduled for April 30, 2000.
Bell ExpressVu has set-up a toll-free response line for guests to contact
them directly about any questions or concerns at 1-877-991-9973.

Kids shouldn't be exposed to either form of "entertainment." What happened
is an interesting comment on our society. Parents don't mind their young
children seeing violence in the form of the WWF, some even being dropped off
at the theatre to watch it alone I gather; but everyone freaks out when it
suddenly switches over to sex.
