I moved to Gander this week and need something to do in my spare time so I
decided to look for aircraft crash sites in the Gander area. If anyone knows
where I can look please email me. Also, a simple map of the site would help.

There is a small amount of wreckage on the trail at the Thomas Howe
Demonstration Forest. Don't remember the details but there was a sign
there marking it.

Also, there was some wreckage on the road going to the Commonwealth
War Graves, off the TCH, just up from the stop sign, on the left. Last
time I was there it was not visible from the road, but maybe some
rooting through the bush there would reveal it.

Brad, there's also numerous WWII and post war wrecks about. Mostly
longer range bombers and aircraft which were able to do the North
America/Greenland/Iceland/England hop. Don't quote me, but I think
there are about 70 if I remember a CBC radio article on it a couple of
years ago. Apparantly they were doing some kind of archaeological
(don't know if that's the correct term for relics 50 or so years old)
excavations of some of the wrecks. You might try going to the airport
to ask.

Or perhaps the Forces Stations public relations office.

Hell, isn't Roger Wiertz a Gandererian? Roger?

I already posted a reply to Brad's post, but your mention of the military
base reminded me of something else. A couple of years ago, some of the
people at 103 Search and Rescue Squadron volunteered to do some work
around a crash site in the area. I don't remember many details, so I'm
not sure how accessible the site is, but a phone call to the Public
Affairs Officer at 103 Squadron might help Brad in his search.

There is a crash site by Baulene that I'm very interested in. So far I've
been able to get very little information on the incident except it was a
major crash. It seems to be a DC3. There is a road built to the site so it
must have been a major incident. The road must have taken some time to
build through bog and rough terrain. Anyway any info would be appreciated.
Good luck on your env\devers and don't get lost in the woods. Let us know
what you find. There are lots of crashes around YQX from W.W.II to keep an
interested person busy for a long time.

The one in the demonstation forest was a B-17(c model I think) U.S. Air
Force overseas delivery aircraft, crashed just after take off in 1942. I`ll
get some more info and post back later.
The one by the graveyard turnoff was mostly removed when the highway was
widened, Lockheed Ventura I think. If you look close you`ll notice the trees
are shorter than those around it, they were flattened by the crash 55 years
ago.
Lots and lots of plane crashes around gander. Just a quarter mile back
towards Gander on the other side of the highway from the graveyard are the
remains of a B-24 R.C.A.F. sub-hunter that was based in Gander that crashed
while returning from patrol. On the bog just up from the "Turkey farm" are
the remains of a Douglas Digby. On the southside of the bog that the Chech
crashed into (IL-18 in 1967) are the pieces of a B-25 overseas delivery
aircraft that crashed and exploded after takeoff. On a bog behind Boot pond
are bits of a B-24 from Ferry Command, pictures of this plane and the story
are in the book "North Atlantic Cat" written by Don Macvicar(its in the
Gander library).
Plane crashes! I could go on and on. I`ll review some information I have and
get back to you.
If this kinda thing interests you, check out my friends webpage.

103 Search and Rescue has a list of plane crashes in the province, but it is
incomplete and some of the map coordinates are inaccurate. Good starting
point though.

Yes it was an R.C.A.F DC-3, an awful lot of it has been hauled out and sold
for scap metal in the past ten years, used to be a lot of bits and pieces in
there.
