Received this message from an acquaintance out west. Anything to it?

Subject: Dialing 90# on your telephone.

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual
identifying himself as a Telus Serviceman, who was conducting a test
on the telephone-lines. He stated that to complete the test I should
touch nine (9) and then zero (0), followed by the pound sign (#), and
then to hang up.

Luckily, I was suspicious, and I refused. I dialed '0' and asked the
operator to confirm if this was correct, so please pass it on.

Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing
90#, you are giving the requesting individual full access to your
telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed
to your home phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many
of B.C.Alta.Ont.NB. local jails and prisons.

DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE ! You may want to pass this on to family
or friends

The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information
with EVERYONE I KNOW.
After checking with Telus, they said it was true, so do not dial 90#
for anyone!

PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW.

I don't know where you got this Stan but it is almost word for
word the same as a report from A Naval Air Station in New Orleans
in 1998.

This, according to Snopes, is a mixture of true and false
information which has been making the rounds on the internet for
over a decade. Here is what Snopes has to say about it;

No, and is based on the premise of trunk access from a pbx. Nothing to
fear for everyday home users.
This has been around for a while.
There are a number of features licensed on carrier class switches (ie
DMS like we have here)that use the #, #90 not being one of them.
# itself merely indicates end of digit collection interval(ie instant
call completion).

Answer:

"Received this message from an acquaintance out west." i.e. western
Canada.

Since it made very little sense to me (especially in regard to a
residential customers line) thought I'd ask.

Not familiar with GTE switches but it does sound something like the
"transfer this call' feature of certain PBX systems.

Thanks for the comments. stan
