On each occasion, the call comes in, you answer it and they hang up. Tonight
we got another call, they hung up, and I got a little unhappy. So I called
them back, and waited on hold for about 10 minutes before a customer service
rep answered. She speeled out the name of the organization and I requested
her name and to slowly tell me the name of the organization again.
Anyway, to make a long story short, it was a call from the "Canadian
Professional Police Association" selling tickets to a comedy show, or to
make a donation. The 800-470 number appears to be an American toll free
number. I politely asked (told) her to remove my number from the auto
dialer, and to stop calls or I would contact the RCMP Phonebusters line
(closed now for the night).
I think that this is a poor way of doing business, especially for a
professional organization dealing with crime prevention. The Association
does exist, and the comedy show is an actual event that will happen, but
these over persistent phone calls are of question.
That's my beef for the night!

To the best of my knowledge, this is a scam. My Dad had a call in Gander
just before Christmas from the same people. Unless this organization is
new since he retired from the RCMP, it is bogus. The only association he
is aware of is the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police
(www.cacp.ca). When he brought this to their attention, he was told to
f%@k off and they hung up. He also called the hotel that is apparently
hosting this event in Gander and they did not have any booking for them.
He has passed this all of his information onto the local RCMP. May be
worth a call to your local RCMP detatchment and the Better Business
Bureau to see if this is legit or not.

This is the site he gave me and if you go in there you will see that there
is going to be a show at
St. John's, NL
Holiday Inn . March 12, 2005
Gander, NL
Gander Hotel . March 13, 2005
so it seems to be on the up and up !!

"Once connected, automated equipment will often set up an instant calling
card number and charge for these calls, with billing coming back to the
number that the call was dialed from. "

You can't always believe everything a web site states, no matter how
legit it appears.
Dale
It seems that this particular case is actually legit. What happens is that
the telemarketing company for the Canadian Professional Police Association
gets a split on monies taken in. This split for this one seems to be around
83% for the telemarketing company, and 17% for the CPPA. There's the
incentive to hammer all of our phones with these solicitations. The phones
are dialed with an automated dialer. For every 10 calls established, 2 are
answered, and 8 go in a queue until a customer service rep is available.
Well, at least they haven't called today, the first time in about a month!
