My wife and I are in the initial stages of planning our 3rd trip to
Newfoundland. We've seen St. John's, Cape St. Mary's, Twillingate,
Gros Morne and L'Anse aux Meadows. This time, my wife would like to
visit the outports on the southern coast and we would appreciate any
and all suggestions.

We understand that the only way to get to these towns (Rose Blanche,
La Poile, Grand Bruit, Burgeo, Grey River, Francois, McCallum, Ramea
and Hermitage-Sandyville) is by passenger-only coastal boats. We will
be traveling from Ohio and flying into Newfoundland. We intend to get
a rental car to facilitate other sightseeing opportunities.

We need to get some ideas on how to proceed with finding lodging,
booking passage on the coastal boats and obtaining a rental car at the
end of the "outport adventure". Maybe we need to make the coastal
boat trip a round-trip. We don't know but we would like some
suggestions.

The Burgeo ferry also goes to most of those other towns. I'm not quite sure
if there's still a boat that leaves Terranceville. If there is, thats a
much shorter trip to places like Francois and Grand Bruit. My sister used
to live in Francois. There are a few families there that would gladly take
you in for a while. They really seem to like having boarders stay with
them.

Its a great area. Enjoy it. Have fun! I'll see if I can find the boat
schedules for you

try www.gov,nf,ca/wst for the ferry schedules. That's where I used to find
the schedule for Fogo Island

A ferry leaves Bay L'Argent...and goes as far as Burgeo...then a day or 2
later a ferry comes from Rose Blanche to Burgeo and back. ANd Rose Blanche
is a quicker way to get to Grand Bruit, Grand Bruit, La Poile, and Pettites
are very close to Rose Blanche. About an hour and a half from Rose Blanche
to la Poile...probably only another half hour from there to grand Bruit.

email me for some info, I have family in those areas so I can find places to
say and rates fairly easy.

Also, try taking a trip to Grand Bank, stay a little while then head to St.
Pierre for a weekend
:)

Can drive to Hermitage-Sandyville, just 20 min drive from Harbour Breton.
Ferry leaves Hermitage, goes to Gaultois, McCallum and Francois.
Seal Cove is just 5 min drive past Sandyville, and can drive thru that,
for another 5-10mins to Grole(resettled) and Pass Island, very nice area.

Some of the info in this thread so far hasn't quite meshed with what I've
been discovering in my own research into the trip, which I'm also
interested in doing.

It would be very nice if the people who run the provincial ferries would
make the trip, and information about it, much more straightforward. It's
probably easier to organize expetions to Africa than do a tour of the
south coast of Newfoundland.

There used to be a coastal boat that ran the entire coast but no longer. You
now have to use the provincial ferry service. If you want to leave your
vehicle in Hermitage and go up the coast (towards Port Aux Basques) this is
probably the easiest way to do it (assuming you want to spend about a day in
each place). The most difficult part is McCallum to Francois and back, for
the most part this can only be done on a Thursday. The days before and
between the Thursday's are pretty flexible but you pretty much have to make
the McCallum-Francois and Fracois-McCallum trips on Thursday's.

TUESDAY- Hermitage - Gaultois
(http://www.gov.nl.ca/FerryServices/schedules/N-mcallum.stm)
Many trips during the day. A very short ferry ride.

WEDNESDAY- Gaultois - McCallum
(http://www.gov.nl.ca/FerryServices/schedules/N-mcallum.stm)
One trip per day. Departs Gaultois at Noon.

THURSDAY- McCallum - Francois
(http://www.gov.nl.ca/FerryServices/schedules/M-francois.stm)
Thursdays only. Depart McCallum 4:30pm (Actually 2nd Tuesday of month as
well. Departs 3pm)

SATURDAY- Francois - Grey River
(http://www.gov.nl.ca/FerryServices/schedules/M-francois.stm)
One trip per day. Departs Francois 7:30am

SUNDAY- Grey River - Burgeo
(http://www.gov.nl.ca/FerryServices/schedules/M-francois.stm)
One trip per day. Departs Grey River 9:45am

Getting back is a little trickier...
(You could also squeeze a trip to Ramea in here
(http://www.gov.nl.ca/FerryServices/schedules/L-ramea.stm).)

WEDNESDAY- Burgeo - Grey River - Francois
(http://www.gov.nl.ca/FerryServices/schedules/M-francois.stm)
One trip per day. Departs Burgeo 1:45pm

THURSDAY- Francois - McCallum - Hermitage
(http://www.gov.nl.ca/FerryServices/schedules/M-francois.stm)
Thursdays only. Depart Francois 7am

Alternatively you could leave Burgeo on Monday and come back to Francois,
then (providing it's the 2nd Tuesday of the month) you can get from Francois
to McCallum. On Wednesday you can get from McCallum to Hermitage. This gets
you in Hermitage a day sooner but you have to spend another night in
McCallum and you have to ensure that it's the second Tuesday of the month.

Not sure about accomodations in all these places, but should be an
adventurous trip to say the least. Hope everything works out for you hope
you enjoy your stay.

Try the Sandyville Inn in Hermitage/Sandyville. It is a house that has
been converted into a 4 room inn, with common cooking facilities. Each
room has a TV and own bathroom. Room price is reasonable (about $60 if
I recall) and includes food to prepare own breakfast. Other meals can
be bought separately, at a reasonable price.

Thank you all for the information. It has been very helpful. Our
trip isn't until 2007, but I've been having a hard time finding much
information about visiting the south coast.
