Cockroaches at Burton's Pond
December 13, 2006

There's a cockroach problem at Burton's Pond apartment complex on Memorial
University's St. John's campus. The bug is not native to this province, but
it's causing big headaches according to MUN Student's Union. MUNSU says
residents were forced to evacuate their apartments at the beginning of this
month so pest control experts could move in. MUNSU says students had to
leave all of their belongings, some of which have been destroyed, and will
have to dry clean all of their clothing. The students union says the
university is endangering the health and well-being of students. University
officials are expected to comment this afternoon.

How dirty are their apts?

"The students union says the
university is endangering the health and well-being of students."

How is the university endangering their health? Learn to clean up after
yourself and you won't have a cockroach problem. Simple really.

Dirty or not...roaches are not native to Newfoundland. I wonder how a
foreign insect gets into MUN housing? Hmmmm.

The big apartment building at Argentia, the former US naval base, had
cockroaches, so this would not be a first.

Your hunch is correct Todd...

The first thing I thought to. People need to be more careful over this. We
take everybody on the planet, it does have downsides to it.

In 1962 the Airmen's mess kitchen at RCAF Station Torbay had to
be fumigated because of cockroaches. They may not be native to
Newfoundland but they have been here a long time.

What the fuck is that supposed to mean?

They probably applied and were accepted
Those are foreign exchange roaches no doubt with lots of frequent flier
miles. I wonder did they fly roach coach. The main thing is if they are
getting a good education or not.

Simple really.

You must be simple really, to think that roaches only live in dirt and are
prejudiced about clean homes.

When the wife and I got married in 2000 we honeymooned @ Casers Palace
in the Poconos. One night this real strange bug ran across the pillow
on the bed in the sauna in our suite. I wacked it with a slipper and
then called the front deck. The dude they sent over said it was a
roach and that they are usually brought to the resort in people's
suitcases. ICK.

I wore slippers the rest of the week.

Classy response...

It means that we, Canada, take immigrants from every place on this earth.
The University the same, people from everywhere and anywhere. These insects
get in their luggage or wherever else and re-produce on our island. Then we
come up with more digsusting creatures.

By careful I mean maybe people should check their shit before they leave for
here.

Clear enough for ya

You were fed a line of BS. The American cockroach is common to
Pennsylvania. Adults are appr. 1 1/2 inches long and reddish brown. Sound
familiar?

I'm not sure what you're implying but while cockroaches may not be
indigenous to Newfoundland they are certainly not uncommon across the gulf.

I would imagine they're referring to the pesticides used to exterminate the
roaches.

Cockroaches are common in many Canadian cities. Until you know for a fact
that this particular species are found only in foreign parts then this has
nothing to do with immigrants.

Supermarkets bring them in as well...

My remarks were in no way racial. It's nice for someone here to have twisted
it that way though.

Nobody said anything about your comments being racial. Pat asked for an
explanation and I simply pointed out that the roaches didn't necessarily
come from outside of Canada.

The bad ones down there are probably too dirty for roaches to live in.
Some people do not have the same values for cleanliness as others. It's
probably just a fluke occurrence. Luckily it has been quarantined and
will be taken care of.

LOL Brenda, I think that was what Pat was implying in his response
("what the fuck is that supposed to mean" is not "please explain your
comments"!) JD, to me your original comments did sound like they were
racially motivated - glad to hear you didn't intend them in this way.

I said Pat asked for an explanation. I did not give an exact translation.
The tone Pat chose to use for that request is irrelevant. The fact remains,
no one said anything about the comments being racial.

Back to cockroaches!
About 30 years ago stayed in a motel near Bay Roberts. Hundreds of
roaches in the kitchen there. Entering in the dark and then switching
on the light one would see them dart for nooks and crannies around
sinks/stoves etc.
It is presumed that they were 'naturalized' i.e. had been here long
enough, had reproduced etc. to become Canadian?

I just thought your translation, exact or not, was humorous. No biggie.
