Its a way of unlocking it using software so you can load it up with
applications etc.

Typically, most people do this to their devices for a reason, such as
installing apps not on the iTunes app store and to do other custom
stuff that apple won't/cannot provide.
It is perfectly legal, but Apple won't support the device anymore
should he have to send it in for a repair etc, but you can always
restore it back to factory setting before sending it off.

hope this helps

Let's be honest here. People do it so they can pirate software.

As you may or may not know, there's a thousands of games, apps, etc.
available for download on the touch. Many of them you have to pay for.
However, if you have a jailbroken Ipod, you can download most of those
apps and games off torrent sites for free (illegally of course) and
install them on your touch.

it's simple to do, you can find step by step instructional videos on
youtube that will walk you through it.
it takes about 15 mins or so and once you're done you have access to a
wide variety of free software for almost anything you will ever
require.
personally, i think the touch is usless unless you jailbreak it. once
it's jailbroken, the real fun awaits.
