Are there any smoking Tim Horton's Resturants left in St. John's...
Someone told me that there were two: The one on Harvey's Road, and
another (owned by the same woman who own's Harvey's Road Tims) on
Elizabeth or Torbay...???

Sincerely,

Last time i was @ tim's on ropewalk lane they had the smokers in a glassed
off area .Looked like caged animals in a cloud of smoke :)
Best place for them too .Smoking in public area's should be 100 % banned .

But honestly, it really isn't a problem if the smoking area was "caged"
in... With the Tim Horton's policy, the resturant is still considered a
smoke-free resturant with the "cage" in place...*s*

definition of disgusting. Did it once, never went back.

They got that glassed off area removed. It is all non smoking now. (Which I
say ticked off a lot of people, because smokers like to have a smoke with
their cup of coffee.)

Supposidly they tried to take the smoking room out of harvey road, but there
was a uproar about it, so they had to leave it in. Don't know if it is true
or not though. Go in there any day, and the smoking room is packed, (It's
only a small one, with a dozen or so tables), and the non smoking area, with
3 times as much room, is vacant.

I think the one on upper Torbay Rd. (not the one by the Blockbuster,
the one closer to Stavabger) is still a smoking one. Glassed off, of
course.

I'm a non-smoker myself, always have been, but sometimes I do feel sorry for
smokers. There are fewer and fewer places they can smoke outside their own
homes. I do understand the health issues involved with second-hand smoke, but
sometimes I feel a bit hypocritical asking people to change their lifestyles to
protect MY health when I don't even change mine. I know what I should be
eating, but I still eat too much and the wrong foods; I know I should get
exercise but I prefer to spend what spare time I have in more sedentary
activities.

Yeah I agree, I think that restaurants should have a dedicated smoking area,
if health risks to employees is a concern, only let people who smoke server
them :-) They are treating smokers like they have no rights, I mean really
why should they have to do with out something they like when it would be
very easy to have a smoking area that wouldn't effect the non-smokers area.
Smokers pay the same amount of money for their meals as non-smokers, but if
they want to smoke they are expected to get out of the restaurant and stand
in the cold, raid, or sometimes even worse, until they are finished then
they can return for desert. Tim Horton's had a great idea with the glass
protection, but I can't understand why the would take them down, I've always
usually seen those rooms full, especially when compared to the non-smoking
area.

This is a really bad example but here goes, smoking is considered an
addiction, a lot of medical types consider an addiction a disability, now
smokers have to smoke out side, no smokes allowed in here, GET OUT! ok now
comes the bad example, who would people react if the same was done for other
disabilities, such as, no wheel chairs allow, get out!?? hmm I don't think
it would go over well, and I believe its required by law to accommodate
disabilities, such as having wheel chair access, etc. Don't you think that
the same should be done for smokers with the disability of being hooked on
tobacco products, a lot of people just can't quit. Please don't get upset
over my wheel chair comments, its just an example of a disability, and I'm
not saying get rid of wheel chair access or anything like that, I think its
great that they are treated as normal people and things are being done and
have been done to make them more comfortable. But I don't see why people
with a smoking problem should be treated different than a non-smoker, just
because they have an addiction doesn't mean they are not regular people.

I don't think you can compare someone in a wheelchair with someone who
smokes. A person in a wheelchair will not adversely effect the health of
people around him/her, but a person who smokes will.

Well, Neil, you'll probably get some responses from folks
who read what you said instead of what you meant <grin>.

Seriously though, I agree with you. I thought that the glass
partition in the Tim's outlets was the best solution I had ever
seen for keeping both groups happy, and I can't for the life of
me figure out why they did away with it.

I am a smoker. I have tried to quit a number of times (made it
two years once), but I always wind up back where I started.
Frankly, I am sick of being treated as a social pariah. I
understand the health concerns of those who do not smoke,
they are valid, and I don't want to endanger the health of
anyone by forcing them to accept exposure to my smoke as a
condition of entering a commercial establishment. This is why
I considered the glass enclosure to be such a great solution.
Smokers and non-smokers could both frequent the same
establishment without getting in to each other's airspace.

I haven't been inside the Tim's here since they went smoke free.

That'll be $1.20, please drive thru......

clearly shows how much they care about their customers ... their cutomers are the
scum of the Earth and must NOT be offered a comfortable place to enter and enjoy
their premises ... boycotting of Tim's is clearly in order - to show the twits
that people have rights also ... non-smokers have options to go to Tim's and
McScummels, Burger ShitF^&% and other outfits ... trying to restrict the rights of
smokers just serves to prove that politically(in)correct dumb FUCKS clearly have

Where is it written that _you_ have a *right* to compromise _my_ health? A
body requires oxygen at birth (and throughout life)... if you choose to
deprive yourself, that's just fine. You have no *right* to do the same to
me. Smoking isn't a *right* (that's a word used far too freely) smoking is
a choice. You can choose (note the word *choose* vs *right*) to smoke, I
can't, however, choose not to inhale. That said, I've no problem with
smokers... you want to smoke, knock your socks off. Just do it in your own
space. I should have as much of this _right_ as yourself to patronize any
establishment I choose without worrying about my health, or how my clothes
may smell later. Quick analogy (this is going on recall): I like beer.
Urine is the residue of my drug of choice. You like smoking. Smoke is the
residue of your drug of choice. Your residue covers my lungs and clothes.
How'd you like if I stood on a chair and urinated all over you and your
clothes? But that's different, right? Why is your choice a "right" even
when it clearly has an effect on others?

> that politically(in)correct dumb FUCKS

health.

I think it calls for a boycott of the two locations that still permit smoking. It's
your right to smoke and have a coffee...but I don't think your right to smoke takes
precedence over the Tim's employee who has to clean the store...they have the right to
breath...at least I thought they did. A lot of smokers I know won't even go into the
smoking rooms because they can't breath...what does that say about the conditions?

So we discriminate against the non-smokers for employment so that you can have a
smoke? What about when staff call in sick...you only call the ones who don't
mind the smoke? I think it's ridiculous. If I was working at Tim's and was
forced to go in those new rooms, I'd be calling up and complaining about working
conditions real fast...I worked at McDonald's when it was smoking, and that was
bad enough with a large open space with a smokeeater...I was the happiest person
around when we went non-smoking...then I just had to put up with fellow
employees asking if they could smoke in my car all winter...get a hint,
non-smokers are put in very bad situations when our friends ask us to do things
for us that we really don't like...don't put your friends in that position!

Acctually, there are several reasons why most smoke rooms were
taken down, including they were really hard to keep clean. (I work at
Tims on Harvey Rd.) You would NOT believe what the air filter taking the
air out of the fishbowl (my little nic for it). In a matter of 4 months,
there was that much buildup in the filter that the stuff we removed,
looked like soggy paper, and there was literally a couple of punds of the
stuff. This is not a big vent, and by no means a small meshed filter
system. The holes in the filter are about 1 square cm and the filter
itself is about a foot and half square. The tiles in the roof have to be
re-painted, not cleaned. And when you take a picture off the wall, you
can still see where it is and the spot it was is several shades lighter.
It's acctually fairly expansive haveing to do that every couple of
months, and not all Tims see the fishbowl as a necissity. And another
reason was that we were having problems keeping the staff in uniform from
staying out there before, during, and after their shift. (Tims staff are
not allowed to smoke during their shift, or in uniform.)

Some people may think that removing a smokeroom would decrease
the sales in that store, well, they are mistaken. The very small drop in
customers in no way outweighed the cost of maintaining a fishbowl. Most
smokers who used to come into a store and sit down and enjoy a coffee
with their cigarrette simply take their coffee to go. And the few
customers who stopped going to the stores without fishbowls simply went
to the two stores left with them (which are both owned by the same lady,
and who also owns another 5 stores that are now smoke free) So, she
didn't really loose any income, it just kinda got shifted around, and she
saved a few bucks in the process.

Just in case I get a whole bunch of people say "But how do YOU
know?" Like I said, I've worked there for a little over 2 years now, and
you learn a lot, besides, I've had this discussion with several of the
managers, and even general managers.

Acctually, we have like one of the higest turnover rates in the
