Here's one for ya:

"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion, you get to
leave a lot of useless, noisy baggage behind."

Jed Babbin
Former US Deputy
Undersecretary of Defense
during a CBC interview about the IRAQ situation on the National last night

I thought the remark was funny until I realized it was made by someone in an
official position. I feel the same way about it as I did about the Canadian
official who called Bush a "moron." Neither truth nor wit is relevant; the
issue is protocol and alliances. I would not insult colleagues I have to work
with for the next twenty years, and in the same way national spokespeople
should not insult nations they will have to work with, however imperfectly or
grudgingly, for the foreseeable future.
Sorry to be a wet blanket.

You sure you're not an American Travis? That's a very American sounding
joke. From a very US of A perspective, generally.

You study history, surely you know the French have been involved in many a
war (seems they often had some issues with the English, and the other way
around). They were often aggressive and were not the type to back down. Now
the World War situation was a different story, but there were excellent
reasons as I am sure you are well aware.

Newfoundlanders can be nice Travis. However, to generalize like this...well
it is you that are being unkind.

Emm,

I do have a sense of humor. I just do not like it when humor is directed
against a group, that is all. In a general way that is.

It was funny, I guess, unless you happen to be French.

Imagine you hear the following, generalized joke:

Q. How do you confuse a Newfie?

A. Hide his welfare check under his work boots!!

Now wouldn't you find that a little offensive? It is still a joke but you
would probably find it less funny if you happen to be from Newfoundland.
Furthermore, you would consider it to be of Canadian origin, somewhere on
the mainland as it is a Canadian generalization of Newfoundlanders. The joke
by Travis here, was based on an American generalization of the French.
That's all I commented on.

I knew it was a joke and I didn't need it explained to me, unlike the little
one about the teacher and the childs boots...which you responded to asking
if it was true. I know a joke when I see it. It's just that I didn't much
care for the French one. Also, I don't think too much, but enough to
recognize it as a joke...how about you with the childs boots?

YOU are the one generalizing Americans! I find this funny how you are
saying i'm generalizing! And about that newfie Joke..it doesnt bother me at
all. And about the joke...the french didn't put up a fight in WWII..that's
where the joke originated. That's fact btw.

Mike,

As a fan and student of military history, i can assure you
that the French have been very selective in with whom the go to conflict
with , unfortunately for you that may be a little to swallow...but you
really goatt take the joke for what it was, just a little bit of a dig
yes at the french but hey, we have to take it on the chin once in a
while, what makes a joke funny is that there is ususally just enough of
a percived truth in them to make folks relate.......

travis is a pretty mellow guy i am sure that he was just passing
on some humorous material.......if you cannot see that then you should
lock your self in a room and not read the papers.......be a
recluse..hahah now i am kidding so dont flame me too bad, give others a
chance haha

have a great day and remember charlemagne,,,,,,,it should make you smile
a little

I bet the the tens of thousands of people who supported the French
Resistance and the families of the thousands of memebrs of that
organization who died find that really hilarious. Time to check your
facts and realize it was the French Government that capitulated
without a fight and NOT the French people.

In this day and age, it's particularly sad that you find the thing you
re-posted to be "funny." It isn't.

Also, before you go talking about proof of how Newfoundlanders, or any
other people aren't nice, I'd suggest a long look in the mirror. You
were the one to continue to promote the denigration of a particular
group of people. You may not have made up the sick little comment but
you passed it along, making you just as guilty as the idiot who made
it up. Does only passing along comments or "jokes' at the expense of
or denigrating other people make a person any less of a racist or the
comments less prejudiced?

Just as it's not hard to poke fun at anything, it's equally easy to find
offence in most anything. The problem with what we find funny is the
comedic is never a victimless time. All commonly perceptable irony is based
in an inequitable view of something or someone. Its something of a natural
law of banana peels and people.
