Many of you already know this, but for the benefit of those who don't, you
can make long distance calls to any phone in Canada and the US by using
Skype on your computer. They're going to have this until at least the end
of the year. On the weekends they have been adding other countries too like
UK, Japan and Mexico. Free to sign up, free to download and free to use.
The software isn't spyware laden and is similar to any other instant
messenger minus the ads and news tickers. You can conference call with it,
too with up to 5 people including yourself or if you have others dialing in
rather than you dialing them you can use highspeedconferencing.com with
Skype and have a couple hundred people in there. There's even handsets now
that resemble cell phones but work on WiFi networks so you can take your
Skype with you to wherever there's a hot spot. If you have high speed
internet, a sound card, headphones and a mic then give it a try. The call
quality is excellent.
If you are in the H/P/A/V/C scene, try these numbers after 9:30pm every
night. A group of us have been having conference calls using Skype or real
phones depending on what long distance plan you have. Feel free to just
listen or participate. Note, if you are using Skype to dial an extension,
dial it but immediately after, place the call on hold, take it off hold and
press # as there's a bug that occurs occaisionally in the tone dialer in
Skype which locks up the bridge if you don't do what I just described.
