Ok,
so this may seem trivial. However, Jim Furlong of NTV fame has to be the
most boring, annoying TV announcer of all time. I like watching the NTV news
but these " question of the week", "This day in history", & "reflections"
segments suck. It is not the segments themselves but Furlong's slow monotone
delivery! He would make the 2nd coming sound dull & boring! Anyone else feel
NTV should get someone (or something) more exciting than Jim "novacaine"
Furlong? I mean if he was any more dead in his delivery he could get a job
announcing @ VOWR.

I forget what his position is now, but he is a "higher-up" at NTV so he may

His title is "News Director" and he has been there forever. I doubt that you
could pry him out.......

He ripped me off two years ago,...I took in some video of a wreck and they
aired it and he never paid me. Granted...it was only $50.00 promised...but
it was the principle of the thing. I gave it to him directly and watched him
view it...he gave me the old story..."check's in the mail"...never came.

There is no such thing as a boring announcer. Just boring viewers.
Jim Furlong's show "A Little Good News" has perhaps the most loyal audience of
any local non-performance current affairs show that has been on television
since it came here in the 50's. His reporting has won numerous journalism awards
and his hand at the rudder of the NTV newsroom has single-handedly guided it
beyond the reach and scope of the once venerated Here and Now newscast.
By the way, it always makes good grammatical sense to start sentences with
capital letters, proper nouns are always capitalized and you mis-spelled the
word "Novocain".
Maybe your command of the English language is only as good as your ability to
judge strong performance.
At the risk of speaking for Jim Furlong, I would think he'd be less concerned
about your shallow evaluation and more appreciative of the fact you watch him!

Signed,
Jim's little brother

I dunno...are you talking about the fellow that runs the reall old news
clips from 40 or more years ago? I don't watch TV much, but I always
enjoy those, especially when they are showing old views of St. John's or
other places I'm familiar with.

Yes there is! And, your brother is THE most boring individual I have ever

You mean bored viewers. Is was because of announcers like Jim Furlong that
they invented the remote control...I know he gives mine plenty of use ;-)

Do you have any statistics to back that statement up? I'd love to see them.

I'm sure jim would like to believe that but in reality it was the years of
constant cutbacks by the CBC that destroyed Here And Now and other CBC
programs. Do you really think those living outside the overpass give a damn
about a fender bender at some intersection in St. John's?

By the way, it is poor Netiquette to point out spelling and gramatical
errors in a news group.

You sound as droning as your brother. He merely presented an aphoristic
review of your brother's announcing.

As shallow as his evaluation might have sounded to you, it is nonetheless
remarkedly accurate.

That is like saying there is no such thing as a bad show, only a bad audience. Yes,
there ARE boring announcers. Yes, there ARE boring shows. I've watched that show
once or twice and now I can't stand to watch "A Little Good News" myself for any
more time than it takes to change the channel-- on the rarity I happen to be
watching NTV. A Little Good News would do as as well as it does with or without
Jim-- you could subtitle the show and it would still have the same audience-- or
have an entirely new announcer-- because it's audience consists mostly of the older
Newfoundland generations who remember that stuff. I can pretty much guarantee you
that it has next to nil of an audience from the last two or three generations--
because they don't remember or they just don't care about old film clips.

> Jim Furlong's show "A Little Good News" has perhaps the most loyal audience of

You cannot consider A Little Good News to be "current affairs"-- and yes, the older
generations tend to stick to their television shows like they stick to their
clothing fashions.

> since it came here in the 50's. His reporting has won numerous journalism awards

Who "gives" these awards? Definitely not the general viewing audience-- only a
cliche group of people who embrace boring.

> and his hand at the rudder of the NTV newsroom has single-handedly guided it

He works well in a News Room, but he does not work well as an announcer.

> By the way, it always makes good grammatical sense to start sentences with

Sounds like you were attempting a personal attack on this person, the sign of
defensiveness. It's the internet-- the epitome of bad grammar, bad punctuation, and
self styled typing.

> Maybe your command of the English language is only as good as your ability to
> judge strong performance.

Would you be saying to the rest of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador that
can't read or write because they don't have "a strong command" of the English
language that they can't tell when something stinks?

> At the risk of speaking for Jim Furlong, I would think he'd be less concerned
> about your shallow evaluation and more appreciative of the fact you watch him!

What about me-- or the rest of the people in this news group who don't like him? I
only watched him once or twice-- and that was plenty enough for me to strongly judge
his performance as an announcer. And there's no need to take this personally, I am
not criticizing the man as a person-- I'm just critiquing his ability to announce.
He is no more of a good, spirited announcer than I am.

I actually did get a reply once from one of the employees at NTV about all
the insanity going on.

The exact wording was "Hey man, he owns the place"

That shows me that the people working for Geoff know he's nuts but they want
to keep their jobs so they do what they're told.
At least he's thousands of miles away in Arizona most of the time.

Anyone remember seeing the text crawl for a pizza place in Arizona? If you
could show them proof you're a Newfie, you'd get your pizza for half price.
Which makes me wonder...if our Geoffy is so set on protecting local
advertising...why is he advertising pizza joints in Arizona?

I think that the problem is that Generation X is too much like the Baby
Boomers. A Little Good News and Jim Furlong's style of presenting this
segment is exactly what our Parents and Grand-Parents grew up with so that's
the style of life they know and understand. They don't necessarily wish to
understand all the aspects of the modern, present day lifestyle. The same
goes for Generation X, only reverse the time frames. We, Generation X, grew
up with Hard Rock, computers, and cell phones. And once again, we don't care
to understand why the Baby Boomers did all the things they did. So now
Generation X is left to laugh at things like Hippies and why they did the
crazy things they did, but the Baby Boomers are left to laugh at things like
The X Games and why young people today voluntarily beat the crap out of
themselves while competing at the X-Games.

It's hard to criticize "older" people on their choice of clothes when all
you have to do is go to the mall on a Friday night and see all the young
punks with their pants almost dragging on the ground or their baseball hats
on sideways.
For those of you who do wear your pants with the waist halfway down their
arses...here's where it originated....in prison
The inmates who were the "women" would wear their pants like that to make it
obvious that they were available.

Then we have all those bellbottom pants....I'm sorry but anyone who wears
bellbottoms can't point any fingers at anyone whose style of dress they
consider outdated.
