No, not a Nfld. expression. Have you not seen the commercial with the
little kids, one of whom says "My sister's a floozie." ?
I've heard the word it in all 6 provinces where I've lived (no, not applied
to me). It dates back to 1911 according to Merriam-Webster & its origin is
unknown.
Gabby
Darryl
interestingly, it's of probably American Origin. It does not appear in
the Oxford unabridged Dictionary. I checked.. <rubbing sore eyes>
I envy you your Oxford. I went looking for "origin of words" or some such
that came a few months ago, but I've got too many books all over the house
to lay my hands on that one easily. But I thought it was interesting that
my 1967 edition of "Dictionary of Canadian English -- The Senior
Dictionary" has this to say: "? variant of Flossie, a nickname for
Florence".
Gabby
Yes, we know, we were just trying to figure out how the word originated. We
only found out that it dates back to the early 1900 (dates given anywhere
from 1905-1911) but nothing about how it developed.
Gabby
Doubt that the subjects of your study would have the information we seek,
OTOH I'm sure you'd have fun doing the research - fruitless though it may
prove to be.
Gabby
I was thinking more in the flesh than in the books.
