Ok, so tonight apparently we found out if Christa Borden is "The One". And
I have to tell you I am not cheering for her.

Before you call me unpatriotic, listen. I only watched the show once and I
can tell you that of those 7 who are left, she is the least talented. Even
the judges think so. Yet, thousands of Newfoundlander's are voting for her
just because she's from here. I don't understand why we have to vote for
someone just because she lives down the street. Why can't we judge all of
the people (like everyone else in Canada) and then vote for the person we
think is best(like everyone else in Canada), instead of going around telling
people who don't even watch the show to vote for her "just because". What a
joke.

If you want to support a local artist, go out and buy a CD by a hard working
NL or LAB artist like Barry Canning or Pam Morgan or Rasa, who go out and
plays gigs and try to make a name for themselves through hard work and
determination and TALENT!!!....not by voting for someone who has the
audacity to call open line talk shows on VOCM to ask people to vote for her.

and you think that the rest of canada won't be voting for those they know
that just live down the street? It's the same everywhere.
If you think they aren't voting for those that they know of just because
they are from a certain place or from down the street then you are wrong.
Everyone one does it, not just newfoundlanders.

Just my opinion anyway.

agreed. she might be a classically trained singer, and may be good at that

I agree with prettivideo. I don't understand how she made it this far. I
haven't been watching the show faithfully, but from what I have seen, she
definitely isn't 'the one'. And what's up with that cheerleader outfit?
As for voting for someone because they are from NL, give me a break, I'd
give my vote for talent.
BTW. I haven't voted for anybody. I refuse to pay a dollar to vote when
other shows charge nothing.

It doesn't happen to the extent that it does here. Most Newfounlanders
spend their time trying to portray their pride to the rest of the country.
Do you really think that someone in Toronto gives a damn whether the winner
is from there, or Winnepeg? I think that in NL, we are much more inclined
to vote for someone just because of where they are from. She is an opera
singer, not a pop star

Christa Borden - I think she done a good job, I however disagreed on the
selection of clothing she chose for the final song. I also remember the
motown chap -"Lamont ____" saying that she can sing, and for someone who has
made many into stars on the Motown scene does have a taste for talent.

Whether you agree or disagree on her abilities, I respect that she at least
gave it a shot, unlike many other's myself included, we are closet critics
whom probably would not have even tried.

Good luck to her, and hey if she is not chosen at least she has the
experience of it, and that will carry forward for a long time.

Exactly.....here's a quote from an interview she did with The Muse (MUN's
campus newspaper)...

"However, Borden remarks that there are some things you just have to do to
get off the Rock. The bottom line is that I’m a performer, and I’m going to
use whatever opportunity I can," she says. "Sometimes you have to have a
pride-slip and do something like Popstars. If it were a perfect world, I
would’ve been on Broadway five years ago."

The rest of the interview is just as bad....she said she thought Popstars
was "crap", and that it was "bad television." While the others looked at
this as the opportunity of a lifetime, she just thought that this was
beneath her (a "pride-slip"??!!). I'm all for Newfoundlanders getting a
shot, but when that kind of ego is involved, I think someone else, who
appreciated this chance more, should have won. Boo for her attitude.....

I just have to say I didn't watch Popstars, except that one episode of all
Newfoundland auditions.

Newfoundlanders are too hard on themselves, always putting themselves down,
never feeling competant. I think that's why when you see the Clorox
commercial, where they take a caller from Corner Brook, you feel a twinge of
pride.

I've seen comments here, where people were saying they were embarassed to
hear Christa sing. You were embarassed when Kim Stockwood hosted the red
carpet thing at the Junos last year, right?

I'd be interested to see what other provincial -type newsgroups have to say
about Christa. They may indeed say she didn't deserve it, if they're saying
anything at all, but I bet no one's as hard on her as her critics "from
home."

I wasn't criticizing her abilities as much as I was criticizing her
attitude. I do think that there were others more talented than she was,
but she did make it into the top twelve, which says that she does have some
talent. But when I read that interview, I was really disappointed in her
attitude....she put down the show at every turn, the very show that will
now be giving her what will probably be the biggest break of her career. I
wonder if she thinks the show is "crap" now???

I'm not sure that is the case. I was thinking along the same lines until I
realized that NL's population makes up all of 2% of Canada's. Even with
expatriate NLers across the country, we'd hardly amount to 4% of Canada's
total population.

Yes, but seeing as NOBODY watches Popstars, and given the fact that only
Christa Borden had openline talkshows, main stream media, Sterlings and all,
practically begging people who had not even seen the show to vote for her,
the Newfoundland vote is undoubtedly the ONLY REASON she won.

4% of Canada's population is more than enough to win a contest like
Popstars, and only us would spend money on a phonecall(multiple phonecalls
in most cases) to vote for someone from "home".

As it happens, I've gone to music school at the same time as the "esteemed"
Ms. Borden. I've heard her sing classically, and there's no doubt, she can
sing. I watched the show and was cringing while she was singing. As a
trained music professional myself (I have a degree in music and one in music
education) I totally agree that she should not have won this thing. As for
her attitude...I've seen her many faces, none of which are very nice and one
of these days it'll catch up to her.

PS. to those who responded with happy knees and red knees....sounds like
you know her personally.

ouch

I think she bought her male votes buy her use of the costumes she wore.

Queen Cs voice is 100s time better, however she didn't have the look, to
me, that people were looking for (or at least young males) which
probably made up allot of the votes.

I wish her luck. However I find it kind of hard to believe that she is
the best singer in the Country.

However, she did clean up very well for the last show.

She obviously is not the best singer in the country however the votes show
that she is the preferred voice at that time on that show... that don't even
come close to proving she is the best in the country. Time will tell for
her... if she can make it thats great.. I'm just glad a Newfoundlander gets
a chance to make her mark on the world. As for the votes she go no doubt it
was family and friends that pushed it over the edge... if you were doing
something like that your family would no doubt do the same for you. She won
fair and square.
