Good things:
1. an hour of local news
2. When Larry Jay co-hosts the news. I know not everyone agrees but
he brings a sense of humour to the news crew which normally suffers
from stick-up-the-bum syndrome.
3. "A little good news". While a lot of people may not be a fan of
Jim Furlong, it's good to see this old archival footage of
Newfoundland from years gone by.
4. Shows in our time zone. We can see some shows in primetime that
are supposed to be show in primetime unlike the on the American
networks.
5. NTV entertainment news. It's nice to see some local entertainers
to get showcased.
6. NTV Sky Cam. Good job NTV.
Bad things:
1. an hour of local news. Sometimes they tend to be a little spend too
long reporting on unimportant stories from, for example, Clarenville
about traffic lights when if it was in St. John's they wouldn't even
think of reporting on it. It's great to report from parts of the
province other than the St. John's, but if it's not newsworthy, then
leave it out.
2. Too many throws to the weather person during the NTV news. How
many times during an hour do we need to see where Sharon Snow/ or Toni
Marie are doing the news from? If they cut this to a minimum it would
leave more room for national and international news, which is
desparatly lacking on NTV.
3. The cheesy 1980's graphics. From what i've read NTV has the
equipment to be able to do modern looking graphics. The logos and
graphics look much the same as they did in the 80's, it's time to
update them. If this station is representing Newfoundland on
satellite services around the world then they should update the look
and stop embarrasing Newfoundland. I've seen cable access stations
that look more professional than NTV.
4. Not watching the clock. NTV often lets the news run a few minutes
past 7:00 so if you're watching the news and not the clock you miss
the begining of any show that starts at 7:00.
5. One word: SIMULCASTING. We don't need NTV simulcasting their
inferior quality signal over other stations showing the same show.
The picture quality of NTV's signal during simulcasting is horrible,
not to mention the fact that they're even doing it.
6. The NTV website. Ever hear of design continuity? It looks like
each section of the site was designed in a different year by a
different person.
7. Putting NTV logos over mostly american music videos and calling it
Canadian Content to fill their CRTC quotas. Not only are we bombarded
with bad music and bad videos, but they all have ugly logos - see
number 3.
8. NTV calling themselves Canada's Superstation. What makes NTV any
more "Super" than any Global or CTV station?
9. NTV sticking their logo in the corner of all shows. Sure other
networks do the same thing but NTV seems to have an extra big, extra
ugly logo in the corner.
10. The late night computer animation "festivals". Who actually made
these damn things? Why would anyone want to watch this wacked out
crap?
11. The NTV (c)raps? Does anyone actually want to hear this horrible
attempt at a rap song about NTV? How much you want to bet this is
actually Jessie Stirling (Geoff Stirling's son). "Daddy, can I bust
some fresh rhymes on your tv station?"
12. NTV calling themselves "Newfoundland owned and operated". NTV
which is owned by Geoff Stirling was not born in Newfoundland nor does
he live here most of the year. Why don't they just say: "NTV, Owned
and manipulated by an american wacked out freak". It's a little more
truthful.
13. Their 'guestbook'. The fact that their guest book isn't an actual
guest book, instead just hand picked positive comments from people is
pretty sad.
