I have a bad circuit breaker on my panel, a double 15amp breaker that is
used for kitchen counter plugs, it is a Westinghouse panel, can I use a
generic breaker or does it have to be a Westinghouse one? I cannot find
them at any of the hardware places Kent, Home D or Canadian Tire, they all
have breakers but names like Siemens, Commander etc. are any of those
interchangeable?

I'm not an electrician, but I play one on TV. LOL
I have the same panel box, its a Novaline NLC 40. It also takes the
Westinghouse breakers. Just yesterday I had to replace a 15-30-30-15. I had
no luck in getting a westinghouse. I ended up getting Cutler-Hammer type
breaker. I had previously installed a double 40 for my welder and Harris and
Roome looked up my box and gave me a cutler hammer for it.
Anyway, the cutler-hammer ones will fit. Just take an old breaker with you
to make sure its a match.
If you google westinghouse you willl find that westinghouse & Cutler-Hammer
are synonymous.

I just had to replace a Sylvania type of double breaker, and I couldn't
find that name brand anywhere to replace it. I took the old one with me
to Kent in Mt Pearl and talked to Ron in Electrical, a very well
informed guy on this stuff, and he showed me the replacement for it, it
too was a Cutler Hammer. Give them a try again with your old one in hand.

There was an article a couple of months ago talking about how switching
circuit breakers on a box (using another companies product even if it fits)
can be dangerous and negate your insurance. Will see if I can find it.

We just had to replace one as well. Kent didn't have what we needed and
they suggested we go to Emberley's. Husband went there and paid $99.xx for
it. He was surprised as last summer when he replaced one it was $50 or so
bucks from Kent, but we needed it so he bought it. The next day he checked
at Home Depot and the same one was there for $53 or so bucks. He went back
to Emberley's and after my husband told them about the massive difference in
price and wanted to return it, they did offer it to him for $59 which he
accepted. Just a reminder to compare prices.

I've never heard of that! But the Cutler Hammer I purchased stated right
on it that it was for Sylvania. I can't see it being a problem for
insurance purposes. $50 to replace a breaker, compared to maybe a
thousand or more to replace the panel, both with the same end result,
which would you choose? I'd still like to see that article all the same.

If the breaker is not listed as useable (classified) in your box, UL
certification is kaput and if there was a fire; there could be no coverage.
Underwriter's Lab , fire department and insurance association has a public
announcement 4 or 5 months ago on VOCM or something.

I just found a letter from UL to Cutler hammer. It's dated 1998 and it gives
a listing of what is interchangeable.
If anyone wants a copy. drop me a line.

Always go online and check your box and it's compatible breakers before go
out.
