Hello Newfoundlanders!

When my wife and I visited Nova Scotia 5 years ago we had lunch with two
Newfoundlanders who told us to visit NF if we wanted to experience the
best of Atlantic Canada.

The following year we visited St. John's, Trinity, Twillingate with
numerous side trips to many wonderful locations. Icebergs, whales, and
scenery were outstanding.

By far, the best part of the trip were the people we met along the way.
NF is a special place to us and I always begin a converation on NF with
"the people are the friendliest I've ever met and we travel a lot". In a
nutshell, you folks know how to make visitors feel like the're part of
your national family.

This year we're headed to Deer Lake (Gros Morne, Viking Trail, etc. for
8 days) and then to St. John's area for another 4 days.

I'll have a lot of questions as I do my research, so thanks in advance
to all responses.

I'd like to know how long it takes to drive from Deer Lake to St.
Anthony. We're planning on driving the Viking trail north from Deer Lake
and since we'll have to turn around and repeat the journey I want to
plan accordingly. It's impossible to compute driving times using a map
(terrain, road conditions, etc.).

Any other suggestions will, as always, be most appreciated. Great B&B's,
things to do, places to visit, etc. will be appreciated.

Thanks for reading this far.

John & Ann Marie Traynor.

The road you will take, Route 430, is ~350 kilometres from Deer Lake to
St. Anthony. If you don't plan to see anything on the way you can
easily do it in 4.5 hours. That's assuming speeds of 80km/hr. I have
made the trip in far less time than that.

Seeing the South Coast of Labrador via the St. Barbe ferry is highly
recommended.

If you're driving at a reasonable speed it will take close to 5 hours. Speed
limit is mostly 80 km/h, sometimes 90 and even 50 - 60 while passing through
all of the small communities. I assume you have heard about the Viking
Millennium. If not let me know and I'll give you some links. I can also
email you a list of things to do in St. Anthony (my hometown) if you want.

It's entirely possible that my map program is incorrect. I had a look
at another map which states the distance as 393 km.

Ten years ago, I drove that run every two weeks, and never tired of it. You
will find few other places in the world that can compare in the blend of
beauty and ruggedness.

Re: South Labrador
If you go as far as St Barbe, you gotta cross over and see it! It is a
beautiful land.

Now many years later, and thousands of kilometers away, my fondest memories
of home (Corner Brook) include these places.

The drive "across country" to Englee is real eye candy as well!
