Anyone else find this page to be extremely slow loading? What gives? Been
noticing this for a while.

I have no issues with any other page and I'm getting over 7Mbps DL with Shaw
(They actually bumped us to extreme speeds this month as a promotion and
still no improvement for the Telegram site only).

Thoughts?

could be a problem with one of their many, random ads, perhaps a
javascript taking too long to load etc, turn off plugins and
javascript in your browser and try again

I have an older iBook that thetelegram.com brings to it's knees.
Initial visits sometimes freeze Firefox for several minutes. Must be
related to the horrendous amounts of javscript it's running.

I ranted about this a few months ago.

The site is the worst ever.

VOCM is just as bad now.

Idiots. It isn't that hard.

VOCM won't pay for a proofreader.
What makes you think they'll pay for a competent webmaster?

I'm repeating myself here:

BUT, I just don't understand how VOCM can have so many common spelling
mistakes. OK, I get it if they're saying "he held the store up with a
but" (bat) and the spellchecker doesn't catch it, except the most
horrid spelling mistakes happen in their articles. I don't understand
it because Firefox has a LIVE ACTIVE spellchecker built into it. Even
now as I mistype a word or two it'll underline as red, with the option
to right click to fix.

So, my point is that even if VOCM's CMS isn't something with a built
in spell checker (come on, just use wordpress?!?) if they're just
using Firefox like a sane web user should, then they wouldn't have
these issues.

face -> palm.

The biggest part of VOCM's problem is not something a spell
checker would catch. It is an abysmal lack of knowledge of
English grammar. It is not knowing how to use similar sounding
words such as there and their, than and then. wary and weary,
affect and effect, advice and advise, etc., The other problem
they have is a reluctance to accept constructive criticism.
Their writer(s) have been struggling for years with the
pluralization of compound nouns, such as 'Governor General'.
They have been told several times how to do this but to no avail.
Likewise they don't seem to understand that the letters HMCS in
front of a Canadian warship's name means Her Majesty's Canadian
Ship and that it is unnecessary, grammatically incorrect even, to
precede it by the definite article 'The'. They also don't
understand, even after having been told several times that there
is no such word in the English language as 'breakin' to describe
the unauthorized entry to a home or business. It's a hyphenated
word, break-in. I have also seen VOCM writer(s) pluralize the
expressions 'break and enter' or 'break and entry' in so many
different ways that it would be laughable if it weren't so sad.
To their credit I have yet to see them use the non-existent
word 'alot', that may be because a spell checker would have
picked that up.

All of these mistakes are made by posters here on a daily basis.
However, it should be expected that a professional news service
would know better.

Forget "knowing better", i think it's a matter of having some
standards and clearly they've got none.

Their site, along side with the telegram is essentially the only
official news source in St. John's.

It frustrates me to no end how horrid and 1990's both of their sites
are.

Their ads are the worst.

Mitigating factor: at least the St. John's municipal election campaign ad
from Borat is long gone.
