Just a question.. my friend is working 3-11(8 hour shift) today at a tim
hortons.. shes new.. and shes only getting 2 15 minute breaks... I thought
it should have been more than that... like an unpaid supper break at
least.... anyone care to comment?

Back in the day when I used to work minimum wage jobs you got a 15 minute
break per 4 hours work. This is why McDonald's used to (still does?)
schedule their employees for 3.5 hour shifts.

Typically, employers will give you an unpaid 1 hour lunch break but I'm not
sure if that's the law. There were many times where I had to work all 8
hours of my shift because there was no one to relieve me.

Well I worked at Dominion and thats how it worked 8 hours = 2 15 minute
breaks 9 hours = lunch and 2 15 minute breaks . You should tell your
friend to get a job elsewhere I know they are a very hard company to work
for.

i worked at tim hortons last year. They're horrible there, sometimes you
don't even get two of the breaks, because it depends who gets in first, and
if they take their break 10 minutes late, some people never get their 2nd
break. It sucks, I worked there 3 months and had to quit.

Normally the places I haved work and 8 hour shift means one 15 minute break
paid and 30 lunch unpaid. Except the last place I worked I got two 15
minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch.

From the Labour Standards Act:
Rest period
24. (1) Subject to the regulations, an employer shall permit an employee to
take an unbroken rest period of 1 hour immediately following each 5
consecutive hours employed under the contract of service.

(2) A collective agreement within the meaning of the Labour Relations Act or
in a written contract of service between the employer and the employee may
make provision for a rest period that differs from that provided for in
subsection (1) both with respect to its duration and timing and a rest
period set out in that collective agreement or written contract of service
shall be considered to be a rest period for the purpose of this Part in
respect of an employer and an employee bound by the collective agreement or
written contract of service.

When my son was working at Northmart last year there were 2-15 min. break
and a 30 minute paid meal period in an 8 hour shift.

As far as I know, the law is

4 hrs work = 15 min break
5 hrs work = 30 min break
7 hrs work = 40 min break

When I worked at McDonalds, that's the policy they had, so I assume it's
the minimum. Other places (like Cdn tire) schedule you 8 hrs, and you
get an hour off to lunch unpaid, along with 2 15 minute breaks...so you
work 7 1/2 hrs out of 9 and get paid for 8...hope this makes sense!

Call Department of Labour.....they will give you the particulars on it. The
company may not follow the guidlines so you either take them up on it or
quit.
