...do we even have any Orangemen in Newfoundland anymore? Seems to me that
the whole organization has a rather bad stigma attached to it.

I'm fairly certain there are.

I think there are alot of Protestants who still take the day off work.

Seems to me that

Why would there be a bad stigma attached to the Order of the Orange?

LOL lodge(wait..wouldbt that be LO Lodge or LOL?...anyway) in Grand Bank
too. As well as a Masonic Lodge. I don't think they are used much
though..other than people renting them for banquets or B-day parties or
something

I never realized we had this holliday until I moved back in 1994, but I
too felt a bit of "why are we celebrating the Battle of the Boyne here?"
when I heard about it. It's sole purpose, it seems to me, is RC bashing
in Ireland. Am I wrong?

Of course, I don't beleive it's called thay anymore.

Oragemans day celebrates victory by William of Orange over King James. Prot
over Cath.
This is a tenous excuse for a holiday in my opinion.
I am not oppsed to a holiday, but get off the monarchist- britannia over all
excuse.
Keep ST PAtrick's day, (which many pople lost as a dayoff) and ST Georges
day, even St andrews day or St davids day for that mater, but Orangeman's
day is a holiday celebrating racist and one sided religious battles.
It is bizarre we only celebreate it here outside UK
Why not have a battle of abraham day to celebrate beating the french and rub
that in every year?, and a day to celebrate the invasion of poland by nazias
for that matter or culloden day to celebrate the destruction of jacobite
scotland by the english too? (little extreme but same reasoning)
WHy not move it two days and we can have bastille day off? Its a lot less
offensive. I know Protestants who even find it offensive.

The Loyal Orange Lodge is still pretty strong in a lot of places. I
used to go out with a fellow from Coley's Point near Bay Roberts in
the early 1990s and he was a Lodge member. I still think that every
New Years Day they have an Orangeman's Parade. Out around the bay,
Protestants still fly Union Jacks from their flagpoles every July 12.

Really? I can't say I've ever noticed Union Jacks on flagpoles in Bay
Roberts on July 12 and I live here. Must go for a drive.

Racist: an individual or organization that discriminates based on race or
RELIGION.

Yes, it is a stupid holiday, and a racist one at that. The Orange Order
celebrates the Protestant religion, the Protestant King William and the
second class citizenship that has plagued Northern Irish Catholics to some
degree, ever since. If you don't believe me, surf the Loyal Orange Order(and
their similar minded paramilitary friends, the UVF and the UDA) on the Net,
read their bulls**t and then try to tell me it's not racist.
Whatever.

This a racist organization and July 12th is a racist holiday.

Check the Irish Times online today, or the front page of our own Telegram...
bonfires and riots in Belfast, all because of a Dutch Protestant's victory
over a Catholic King in Northern Ireland in 1690. Every year, this day
brings violence, and sometimes death, in Northern Ireland. William of Orange
is on par with Cromwell, and we surely don't celebrate his deeds.

I am always amazed(and ashamed) that we continue to even acknowledge this
contenious day in Irish history.
Any excuse for a day off will do.

As Lionel said, WTF?
