I was on board with the new format because the music was awesome, and there
was little of the idiotic banter found on other stations (ie: stupid
contests on Krock, and a personal anecdote between every song on Coast).

My allegiance is faltering........

Some comments.....

Thaw stupidity is creeping back in...stupid contests, stupid callers,
stupid comments on everything, stupid morning show............

Nickleback is awful.......yes....some people like them.....but you shouldn't
play them so much. I can only take so much before I put on the Ipod.
Pink Floyd is awesome, but I don't want to hear Have a Cigar all the
time......and don't bother to play Comfortably numb. That song has played
every 10 minutes on Krock for years, and it's dead to me.
The full version of one bourbon, one shot, one beer is WAY too long, and
shouldn't be played as much as you do. Is this song used when someone needs
a smoke break or to void their bowels? If you need a long drawn out song,
play In-a-Gadda-ad-Vida. At least you can groove to that.

A lot of songs you play don't match your format. You play a lot of good
rock songs, but also a lot of crappy, cookie cutter, un-inspired, top 40,
one or two hit wonders. Your format is rock, and some of the songs in heavy
rotation are just shitty. You play good songs, but follow them up with crap.
Who does your music programming? Do you think that your average Foo Fighter
or Queens of the Stone age fan will keep on rocking when Nickelback(sucks)
comes on next? Does the average fan of Alice in Chains also like u2?
Hearing NIN followed up by Nickelback(sucks) is making me bi-polar..

* to be fair, I don't know if it's always Nickelback that I hear, I just
can't really tell the difference. They sound enough alike that I turn the
station....

in conclusion

1. Let Larry read the news without making the stupid comments on everything.
Stupid comments aren't needed. Same with Danielle in the evening.
2. You are wearing out songs already, and you format change isn't very old.
Also, people have been hearing the same songs worn out on Krock for years,
they don't need to hear them on your station as well.
3. stick to the format, or at least try to group your genres

Couldn't agree more!

I mean, the station is a lot better than it was, but it's still far
from great. First of all, they're still catering to too many people.

They need to loose the classic rock (or at least most of it). If I
want to hear classic rock, I can listen to KRock.

Then, they need to start ditching some of the garbage new rock they
play (theory of a dead man, Nickelback, Hedley, Hinder, etc.etc.) I
turn off OZ fm the second any of that **** comes on.

They have such a great opportunity to cater to a fairly large and
young demographic that would really like to hear something different
on NL radio.

Also, considering how much music they have to work with, it's
sickening how often you hear the same songs. The only QotSA song I
ever here is "Make it with Chu"... the only Metallica song I ever hear
is "Enter Sandman"... the only Hip song I ever hear is "Love is a
First"... and so on. A plethora of music from these bands, and they go
almost exclusively with one song.

Bottom line:

a) Generally speaking, people who listen to Audioslave and Queens of
the Stone Age don't listen to Nickleback and Hedley. OZfm should just
pick a side.
b) There's a TON of awesome new rock music out there that they're just
not playing for some reason (in particular, unless it's classic rock,
they seem completely against any non-american band)

OZFM don't have a clue.

I remember when I used to listen to it years ago. The dj was going on and on
about Michael Jackson.
It was his birthday and the dj was whipping out all sorts of facts about him
and once he was finished
he played a non Michael Jackson song.

Granted I'm just a lowly listener but after going of for 5 minutes about a
particular artist, shouldn't a couple
of brain cells get together and decide it might be a good thing to play a
song by the artist I just went on about?

Also..I'm almost positive they download at least some of their songs. I
remember the song Get This Party Started
by Pink had a skip in it at the same spot every time they played it. I
downloaded the song and got the same skip.
Then I downloaded a different copy and no skip. Apparently OZ couldn't do
that because their copy skipped for months.

they keep calling themselves number 1. I'd like to see the proof.

OZ-FM was pretty much the only station I listened to before leaving
St.John's in 1993. On subsequent visits the station has gone way
downhill. It's not just Oz-FM however. It seems that pretty much
everyone has gone to the cheapest format possible, installed automation
systems and booted DJs out the door. Stations in Halifax have suffered
a similar fate. No one is immune.

I suspect the sudden onslaught of foolish games and prizes, as well as
the other silliness has to do with the ratings period. This is when the
audience of each station is determined and advertising rates can be
determined. By attracting people to the station with the contests, more
money can be earned until the next ratings period. They aren't reaching
out to the intelligent, but rather to grab whatever mass audience can be
suckered in.

My solution to mindless radio stations is to get a Sirius satellite
system. There is one in my car, and one in the house. I only listen to
CBC to get the hourly news, and when the fuse in the Sirius system
fails. Otherwise the moronic crap has lost a listener.

A good solution. My solution was to get SONOS. I also tried Logitec's
Boombox as well. Sonos is wireless throughout the house and can not
only play local stations but thousands upon thousands of stations from
all over the world or countless internet stations. Plus there is no user
fees. It can also play music from your HD or Ipod. You can also
subscribe to Napster, Last FM, Rhapsody etc. for a fee if you like.

The only local station I listen to is CBC morning show which is set to
my bedroom alarm. I'd much rather wake to Jeff, Cec and Nancy telling
me what's going on in the city than the noise and foolishness of the
other local yocals.

Oz is way better than they were a year ago... I for one like the "new"
format. They play Rock, all Rock, not just one genre of rock... so for me
it has turned me back into a listener when for years I abandoned them for
K-rock. Their format can be tweaked slightly but I think they are on the
right track.

Will they play everything you want to hear? Of course not....they are a
station that has adopted the "a bit of rock" for everyone. Now I will agree
that they wear out songs, but they do that because usually they pick the
most popular songs by these bands. For every person out there that hears
"Enter Sandman" for what seems like the 1 millionth time who groans and says
"Holy crap not that song again"... I am willing to bet there is another
person in their car/home pumping their fist saying "Frigging awesome, I love
that song, I haven't heard that in years!!"... Sure I would love to hear
maybe "Of Wolf and Man" or "The God that Failed" off of the same album but
that probably won't happen... I am just glad that they play Metallica at
all!

Public/Free radio is not going to cater to every single person's personal
taste. If you want that load up an Ipod/Mp3 player with your own personal
playlist and off you go.

Ever try DJ'ing a wedding? I have a couple of times and I can tell ya it's
a rough gig... :-)

All rock?
Then you haven't listened early Sunday morning when they play Newfie music.
Not that there's anything wrong with Newfie music...just saying that they
claim
to play nothing but rock when it's not true. I think they don't even listen
to their
own station and don't even know what's being played. It would explain some
of the screw ups in the past such as hours of silence and hours of playing 2
or
even 3 songs at the same time. That takes some serious lack of ability.

Oh I agree. I'm just saying, they could still be a lot better.

Exactly. Ozfm originally changed their format because they were
playing everything under the sun, and because of that, no one listened
to them. The people who were listening to Ozfm for the pop didn't want
to hear the rock, and vise versa.

Now, they have the same problem, only it's not as pronounced. Every
time I hear Hedley or some ****, Oz gets turned off. On the flip side,
I'm betting that many of the avid Hedley fans out there turn OZ off
the second they hear Audioslave or Rise Against. Sure, there may be
SOME people who listen to all of it, but generally speaking, in my
experience, those types of musical tastes are like oil and water.

All I'm saying is, if they chose to go entirely with one way or the
other, they would probably have more loyal fans.

> Public/Free radio is not going to cater to every single person's personal

I do. 90% of the time I'm in the car, I'm listenimg to my iPod. But
for the super short trips/ when I forget my iPod/ etc., I end up
listening to the radio.

PS I forgot to mention how they love to edit out guitar solos. Sweet
Child o Mine, No More Tears, Comfortably Numb, etc. etc. All of them
have half the guitar solos stripped out. OZ, I thought you were a rock
station? Sounds to me like your still catering to pop fans, who might
cry if they have to listen to more than 10 consecutive seconds of
guitar.

Actually to reply to the guitar solos..... that is common, not just on the
radio, same applies to say Much Music... I recently downloaded the Sweet
Child of Mine video which was aired way back in '87 or '88 on MTV... I was
going to suppress the audio (which wasn't the best) and overlay a good
quality (320 kbps) MP3. Everything was going fine up to Slash's solo, they
edited out a big chunk of the solo. So I think it's more about "air time"
than a conscious decision to edit out guitar solos... but maybe I'm wrong.

I dunno... I for one have a large range when it comes to my taste in rock
music. I like Classic Rock, Metal (all types), punk (new and old), hard
rock... basically all types of rock however you want to classify it... I can
even listen to a limited amount of rap as long as it has a decent beat... I
don't pigeon hole myself into listening to one type of rock or one artist
because that would become extremely boring to me extremely fast.

However, I can't listen to Pop and 99% of what's on Top 40, Britney Spears,
Justin Timberlake, Rihanna (or however she spells her name) and all of the
rest of the "manufacturered" music stars make me want to shove sharp pencils
in both my ears :-) ...

So I like the new OZ... they may not be perfect (I wouldn't expect it to be,
I mean they are the sister station of NTV right? lol) but they got me back
to listening to them...

I dunno. I just checked, and they're literally saving 30 seconds by
cutting out the first half of the Sweet Child o Mine solo, and 25
seconds by cutting out the first half of the No More Tears solo.

I mean, I can understand them chopping down Freebird... that's a 4
minute solo. But 25-30 seconds? Come on, how pressed are they for
time!?

I know a number of people who are avid rap/pop/hiphop listeners, and
they loose their shit if they have to listen to more than 10 seconds
of music that isn't accompanied by vocals (and don't DARE ask them to
listen to an entirely instrumental song). I honestly think it has
nothing to do with time, and everything to do with catering to people
who just don't know how to relax and enjoy the music.

> and all of the rest of the "manufacturered" music stars make me want to shove sharp pencils

Exactly, the key word there is "manufactured", hence why I don't want
to listen to Nickleback, Theory of a Dead Man, Hinder, or any of that
other crap. It's just mass produced rock.

As for pop music (or any other genre for that matter), I just hate
supporting "artists" who are getting credit for work they didn't do.
There is a lot of talent in pop music, and anyone who thinks otherwise
doesn't know what they're talking about. The problem is, most "Pop
Stars" had no hand whatsoever in writing or producing the lyrics and/
or music in their songs. They're just handed a piece of paper and told
to "sing this".

Love the coast cool jazz. I must be getting old as I seem to be
listening to a lot of CBC lately with a bit of VOWR thrown in. At
least VOWR plays a few tunes I haven't heard in awhile. The other
local radio stations SUCK! All that stupid trying to be funny talk
between songs drives me nuts. Then there are all these stupid games.
Anyway I haven't listened to local radio aside from CBC in ages. I'd
rather learn a little than listen to the other stations with their
brain rot conversations playing the same songs over and over. I listen
to and enjoy all types of music from Metal to Classical to Bluegrass
and all in between. There are lots of music stations to be found on
the web and I use my surround system to listen to the wide selection
of music on my TV.

I'm listening to Airbourne on OZ right now and they are frigging awesome...
and yes yes yes they sound like AC/DC and they are from Australia... I could
care less if were ripping AC/DC off completely, to me it's like listening
to AC/DC when they were young and in their prime :-)

As for the comment that Nickelback is mass produced rock.. have a listen to
Curb and Silver Side Up, that's where their roots are and they were
definitely not handed a sheet of lyrics and said "here play/sing this"....
these guys are great musicians... but of course like anything, once they got
a taste of mainstream success they wanted it all and money was #1, so they
started writing "mass produced" crap which lost me as a fan... their latest
album Dark Horse is once again "let's write it for the mainstream radio/MTV
with a bunch of hooks and make a zillion dollars", but at least this time
is back to hard rock..lol..

I totally agree with your statement about "pop stars"... [Insert Country
name here] Idol makes me sick.... ughhh.

I love the new OZ format.... It's exactly what I want to listen to and I
will put up with the odd "glitch" and "mass produced artist"...

And as wrote this post I just listened to ZZ Top, Alice in Chains, and now
The Trews... can't get better than that for a playlist as far as I'm
concerned :)

Oh I know all about it. I was listening to Nickleback long before most

By the time Silver Side Up hit though, I was quickly loosing interest.

I liken Oz to be the lesser of 2 evils. K-Rock has really become a
broken record. With such a plethora of classic rock music why do they
continue to play the same songs over and over is beyond me!! I do fear
that Oz is on the same path as I have been listening to them since the
format change 8 hours a day at work and the repetition is amazing!!!
It boggles my mind why they cant play a wider range of music??? I'm
not saying they have to cater to my taste all the time but PLEASE play
some different songs!!! I personally would love to have the
opportunity to do the playlists for a one week period and see what the
reaction would be. One thing is I would guarantee the same song wont
be played twice in that week!!! On a side note the DJ's are terrible
on both stations. Enough with the stupid banter!!!

At the risk of exposing myself for the old fart that I have become, I
remember waiting up until midnight in June, 1977, for choz to begin
broadcasting. I was a loyal fan for years. But the constant banter,
stupid commercials, and the unhinged lack of coherence in the playlist
finally had me quit, and move to satellite. From the other posters,
looks like the satellite subscription will be renewed.

There is a reason for the repeat and it has nothing with the fact that the
DJ can't queue up more music... it's all about the popular songs from an
Artist... the one or two songs that usually get heavy play because they
became popular to the general population. OZ, KROCK, Coast, etc ...all of
them are the same... artist like say Aerosmith have a huge back catalogue
but you won't hear it 95% of it because 95% of the population only want to
hear the 5% that "made big in the mainstream"....like it or not, that is the
reality of it.... so they take the old standards and put them into rotation.
They know that a large percentage of their listeners are not listening
non-stop for 8 hours and scrutinizing the playlist, so that is why the
songs you hear over and over are played over and over. Believe it or not,
most bands only have a handful of songs that are readily recognizable to the
general public. And when I saw "general public", I mean the casual listener
who likes music but is not necessarily a music fan. If you setup yourself
up in the Avalon Mall someday and asked people that passed by to name 5
songs by any band you would only see a very small percentage that could name
them off...

For example with Aerosmith you will hear "Walk this way" and "Sweet Emption"
over and over, but I can gaurentee you won't hear "Adam's Apple" or "Uncle
Salty" from the same "Toys in the Attic" album.. why.... because they were
no where near as popular as the aforementioned songs.

And if you were in charge of the playlist for a week, while I would applaude
the fact that you pull out all of the great songs, I can gaurentee you that
you would be heckled off the air in one day by the "general public" :-)

And yeah... ditto on the banter, I don't need to listen to it most times...
but sometimes it makes me laugh...

I listen to the channel MAYBE 10 minutes a day; if that. I STILL hear
the same songs all the time. I know what you're saying about the most
"mainstream" songs, but even with that mentality, I still say they
could have a far greater variety.

Furthermore, I thought Oz was supposed to be the "Rock of the Rock"?
It's clearly supposed to be a music station for rock lovers. In which
case, there's no reason they need to stick to the 1 or 2 uber-popular
singles. The demographic they at least pretend to be aiming for,
should know, and have appreciation for, a lot more than that.

Don't get me wrong, I understand what you're saying, and I understand
why they do what they do. Having said that, it doesn't matter if
you're talking radio stations, tv stations, film, literature, etc.
etc. If you pander to the lowest common denominator, you're inevitably
going to destroy the integrity of your product.

Oz acts as if they're a radio station for true rock fans, and if they
truly were, they wouldn't be worried about catering to the "general"
listeners out there who can't name more than 2 Aerosmith songs.

On top of all that, while my musical sensibilities probably aren't
like most, I for one love hearing music I never heard before. I'm
always searching for great new bands and tunes, and I would love it if
Oz had the balls to play some stuff people might not have necessarily
heard before... expand some peoples horizons. That's why I loved XM
radio for the time that I had it... introduced me to some great new
bands.

> And if you were in charge of the playlist for a week, while I would applaude

I just don't get why the "general" music listener is so terrified to
listen to something they haven't heard before? I usually take care of
music at parties/cabins/etc. when out with my friends. I try to throw
in some music that people have probably never heard before.
Inevitably, as soon as an unknown song comes on, someone is
complaining, despite the fact that if they actually calmed down and
gave the song a chance, they would realize the band/tune is perfectly
in sync with their other musical tastes.
