Bacalieu (Ryand Fancty Version), in fact Many Ryans fancy versions of NF
songs including the Jolly Jack Tar sung by Fergus, and last but not least
many Figgy Duff versions of trad songs like Yankee Skipper or Pam and
Anita's siul a gra.
Actually there are loads of great ones out there, sadly I dont hear any new
ones lately just regurgitations and blatant ripoffs of other versions.
Great big sea have come up with some good takes on Gideon Brown or Scolding
wife lately, but thats the exception.
The Peacock collection is full of great songs that have never been
commercially released.
Time for someone to start diggin em out.....

How? Easy - I just typed it and hit "send." Many of the songs in this
discussion aren't "Newfoundland" songs. Have you devised a strict test
of what makes a song a Newfoundland song?

Songs become part of a place.
Really only the songs identified above that have been written here are
really NF songs.
Many of the 'traditional' NF songs are either written in the last 100 yrs or
are older british/scottish or irish songs that have slightly different
versions here, ie old polina, ryans and pittmans etc....

That's a great list, T, but I have to comment on the Ennis Sisters.
From my experience with relatives and friends who sing and live outside
of St. John's and aith attending the Folk Festival in August, there
seems to be a Newfoundland tradition that women who sing, even those
with beautiful voices like the Ennis Sisters, have to screech their
songs. I mean literally screech and not sing. Why is that? It really
mars a lot of the singing. Just my opinion.
