if I were to have this song I'd at least have it by the Wonderful
Grand Bank, and or the song writer! Ron Hynes
You've missed both of them by the way.
and then there is Red Island
and Figgy Duff!
Tickle Harbour
Anita Best and Pam Morgan
and there was an album put out years ago with popular musicians doing
old favourites that was really good: Another Time - The Songs of
Newfoundland.
so much wonderful music here :)

The other day I looked up the word "paranoid" in the dictionary.
It said: what do you want to know that for?

Freudian slip? :) I guess the Newfoundland and Labrador travel guide
doesn't call it the "quintessential Newfoundland outport" among other things
for nothing
:)
Had it on the list
> Shanneyganock - The Islander.mp3
Had the Navigators version on the list
> simani - newfie in a calgary hat.mp3

Everyone seems to be picking only from the Newfoundland music genre,
but since you actually say music by Newfoundland artists, that leaves
me room to give my list *grin*
Mine would include, in no particular order:
TNT [Denis Parker] - Once Around the Harbour
Denis Parker and Roger Howse - Eagle Ridin' Papas
Great Big Sea - Seven Joys of Mary [so it's a Christmas song, sue me]
Red Island - Banks of Newfoundland [does anyone have this as mp3?]
Ron Hynes - Back Home on the Island
Ron Hynes - St. John's Waltz
Ron Hynes - Sonny's Dream
Roger Howse - Petty Harbour Bait Skiff
Roger Howse - Blind Willie McTell
Figgy Duff - The Greenland Distaster
Wonderful Grand Band - Babylon Mall [it always makes me laugh]
Wonderful Grand Band - UIC
Dick Nolan - Aunt Martha's Sheep
Dick Nolan - CN Bus [always made me laugh as a kid]
Smiley Bates - And don't tell Jeanie I'm blind [I remember this as a
kid too]
Pamela Morgan and Anita Best - Lukey's Boat
Great Big Sea's version too!
Fergus O'Byrne - The 'Old Polina'
The Irish Descendants - Ramblin' Rover
The Irish Descendants - Rollin' Of The Sea
The Fables - Down East Day
and to end it off in the right style:
Vonnie Barron and Esther Squires's version of Ode to Newfoundland
I know I'm missing something but I think that's enough ;p
And if Anyone has the Red Island song... I'd love to get a copy. I
only have it on tape these days, lost the album 9 years ago :|
Actually, although it's on the East Coast Christmas album, there is nothing
particularly Christmassy about this Marian Hymn. I think you're safe. ;o)
Gabby
I don't think anybody's mentioned "Let Me Fish Off Cape St. Mary's". That's
pretty quintessential.
Joan Morrisey... "The Kelligrews Soire" is another must.

How does a UK cult group singing their version of a traditional UK folk song
become 'essential Newfoundland song'?

That's a great list, T, but I have to comment on the Ennis Sisters.
From my experience with relatives and friends who sing and live outside
of St. John's and aith attending the Folk Festival in August, there
seems to be a Newfoundland tradition that women who sing, even those
with beautiful voices like the Ennis Sisters, have to screech their
songs. I mean literally screech and not sing. Why is that? It really
mars a lot of the singing. Just my opinion.

A very good list, TGP. But I would also include Connemara's rendition
of "Tickle Cove Pond."
Heather
P.S. Too bad Connemara aren't in the Folk Festival line-up this year.
Let's all wear black bands around our arms in protest.
