NTV Newshour Sucks!

Am I the only person who seems to be having a problem with the repeating of
news.

I like watching the NTV newshour, but lately since they added the Sunday
6:00 pm newshour it seems that every story they mention is guarateed to be
in the NTV noonhour program the next day. For example: the funeral coverage
for Samantha Walsh. Nobody felt more saddened or lose for this young child
and her family than I did but NTV had her funeral coverage on Friday at
6:00, the same coverage on sunday at 6:00 and then again today at 12:00 it
was on again and I am willing to bet that it will be on again at 6:00 this
evening.... The child is laid to rest so why don't you give the family a
chance to grief and stop playing the same story over again.

I am sure that there is some other story that they can cover.

Just another one's opinion........

I guess there were no fender benders in St. John's
to report to us all (as if we cared).

Maybe they should bite the bullet and make it
the NTV Evening News QUARTER Hour.

On another note....they did take "the best newscast award" ??
from Here and Now....don't ask me how.

If any complaining should be done, it should probably be to eliminate Here and
Now...CBC is our money being spent, whereas NTV isn't...if NTV had all the news
viewers, the news could be much better. We pay nothing for NTV, it's free...no
cable needed or anything...CBC eats tax dollars to repeat the newscast that's
privately funded by NTV...I like CBC, but I don't think that we need two
versions of the same newscast suppertime.

I agree that NTV news is really bad. After years of living in
several other provinces I was astounded when I returned at just
how bad the program is. The anchors are bad - some of their
comments made on the side are rediculously childish. Their
reporting style is unprofessional and the whole program is like
it's thrown together at a moments notice. The weather forecast
is horribly bad - I only catch the first half hour from time to
time but I think showing a rapidly moving satellite shot is not
the way to show the general public how the systems are shaping
up.

Personally, I hold out hope that Global will move in and clear
out the whole staff and replace them with experienced
professional journalists.

And speaking of repeating stories - what is it with JFK and NTV?
Anyone else notice that pre-occupation from time to time.

I don't consider this childish complaining, but rather a
statement of an opinion. It's only through voicing one's opinion
that things are changed.

Yeah, and NTV is pretty just an American station with a scattered
Canadian show and newscast, plus the quality of the station and newscast
is not the best. NTV may be based in Newfoundland, and they may go on
and on with songs about "Newfoundland TV" but most of their content you
can see on FOX, NBC, and all the other popular American stations. I think
our tax dollars are well spent on the CBC, a station that shows 95% Canadian
content and is very high quality.

What I'm saying is that if Here and Now didn't exist, NTV would have a ton of extra
viewers and money to hire some good reporters, probably the CBC ones, and they news
would be better than both Here and Now and NTV Newshour are right now...and our tax
dollars wouldn't be spent repeating the news...CBC programming is great, but
duplication I don't like...especially when it's private business competing with tax
dollars...NTV goes broke, it goes broke...CBC goes broke, the government infuses
more money!

I'll take CBC news over NTV any day. It has the professionalism
that NTV will never have. It knows what and how to report the
news.

Personally, I think it's embarrassing knowing that NTV is a
satellite station being broadcast to other parts of the world.
My god, what they might think of us based on that.

This is a fine sentiment, but in reality NTV would have a ton of extra
viewers and G Stirling would put a ton more money in his pocket. The
production values at NTV are poor for a number of reasons.

1) salaries are low. Because of this the talented people leave for
better jobs elsewhere.

2) there are not enough production support staff. If you don't have the
time or resources to do a good job a half-assed job is the best you can
do.

3) Biggest reason: G Stirling. Instead of creating a REAL news
department by injecting the cash needed to properly cover the province
(and hiring a news director) he lets space cadet #1 Jim Furlong flail.

Here and Now is the highest-rated CBC TV evening news broadcast in
Canada. In most other markets CBC is far down the ratings scale. In
Toronto CBC TV is regularly near the bottom.

If NTV did more than token coverage of the province the ratings would
tip in NTV's favour. The investigative reporting of local issues that
is done by Here and Now is the domain of private broadcasters in other
markets. Here, if CBC didn't do it it wouldn't get done. I don't
believe that would change if Here and Now didn't exist.

Every knows it's all because of Geoff Stirling. NTV could be good be a
quality station, but not while he runs it. I avoid watching NTV
whenever possible. This NTV stuff comes up every few months and nothing
ever changes we really have to do something!

And guys, Toni-Marie? I don't think she's so great. :)

In many Canadian markets, the ambulance-chasing, Shitty-TV style newscast
has the greater audience share, and hence advertising revenue. Doesn't
bring the quality up one little bit.

It is out tax dollars, but the CBC news - for all its flaws - is still infinitely
better than NTV's. It's a geniunely professional newscast, whereas muc of the NTV
program is literally recorded with camcorders. If the CBC wasn't dedicated to
"Jonovision" (now never let us speak of it again) they could air "Here & Now" at 6
PM, right after The Simpsons, and clobber NTV.

Is there any possibility of Global (formerly MITV in the Martimes) coming to
Newfoundland? Maybe a little private-sector competition would straighten out NTV.

Actually, NTV jumped ahead of Here & Now in the ratings last year. I hope it's
because of it's earlier time slot and not the percieved quality of its coverage.

Catch 22...
If NTV was a better news show than H&N they would bring
in more advertising dollars. But it will take more money to get the
show up to better ratings. Maybe Geoff should sell a Porsche
or two and pump some deneros into the program and make it
better than H&N, thus increasing revenues and continue to
operate the newsroom with sufficient budgets to provide outstanding
quality.

They have access to all the US shows because there is no Global station in
Newfoundland. In most of Canada, Global and CTV split them among themselves (plus
a few cable and independent stations). In this province, now that CBC has gone
all-Canadian (except, thankfully, for The Simpsons) NTV has the pick of the bunch.
