What are these trees in Montreal? Would they grow in Newfoundland?

Hard to tell without seeing the leaf closer. Poplar? (Which Moscow
regrets planting because the pollen is as thick as snow).

Poplar? They didn't have the narrow shape of the poplars I know and
their leaves were more elliptical - like ash.

The leaves look ?lanceolate, too narrow anyway for poplar or aspen.
