I know some of the garden centres have run out of spikes already and wanted
to let folks know that Canadian Tire on Kelsey Drive still has lots of
spikes as of June 23/11.

Spikes are actually small New Zealand flax plants. People want them for
their containers following the design guideline of having a high plant in
the middle, some colorful annuals around the spike and then a couple of
trailing plants. Spikes are treated as an annual here in NL but I've been
able to over winter mine by putting them in an unheated garage. I keep mine
in a pot because they are actually very vigorous growers and will become
huge over time.

what size are they?

last year they had some really nice larger ones.

from what I saw this year, they are fairly tiny little ones in a round
type pot

Yes, the ones I saw at Canadian Tire are quite small. If you over-winter
them they will get larger each year (to the point of being too large for my
small patio garden). Bickerstaff had some lovely burgundy colored spikes
this year - something new and quite attractive.
