Windows NT, 2K, and XP all come with IIS which makes as good a FTP server.
As for Client, why not just use I.E 5.0 or up?

What OS? If your running Linux, I would definately ***NOT*** go with
wu-ftpd server. That has more holes in it than security in Afghanistan
;-) Take a look at proftpd, that seems to have a good record.

If your running MikeySoft, I'm inclined to stay away from the
MS-supplied server (e.g., IIS 4.0, IIS 5.0). There are far too many
security patches coming out for that server. I also don't like having
usernames/passwords integrated with the Microsoft authentication system.
It is easy to administer, etc, but... I don't use MS web/ftp
servers, so I don't know of a good one. I'd do a Google search on
Windows-based ftp servers.

As for the ftp client - ws_ftp32 *used* to be good. I've gone back to
the command line.... ;-)

What makes it good? Very few options and crappy security?

Here is what I am using for my FTP server and Client software on a Win 98SE
machine. The Guild FTPD is very solid and easy to use.

Guild FTP Daemon - http://www.guildftpd.com/download.php
WS_FTP LE - http://www.ftpplanet.com/download.htm

Easy to setup and easy to use. If all he wants to do is share files IIS
will work fine. Personally, I'd go with Mike Pelley on this one with a
linux box but for someone who is not familiar with linux.....IIS
