I recently got an iPod nano at Staples and when I tried
setting it up today I found that it requires iTunes
version 10 or later and when I tried downloading
iTunes 10 from http://www.itunes.com/download
it said it required Mac OS 10.5 and I have Mac OS 10.4.

Is there any way around this or will I just have to
return the nano and get an iPod Classic?

From a google search of
ipod nano mac os x 10.4.11
it seems the only solution is to upgrade to Mac OS 10.5
so I will have to return the nano to Staples (the staff
member who I dealt with told me it should work with
older versions of iTunes and I didn't bother to look
at the system requirements in fine print on the box).

Who in their right mind would do that? :o)

I hate it when people suggest to replace a mac with a pc cause they ran into a problem. I'm not a very big fan of mac's either, but, its just a useless suggestion.

I would; To get away from a manufacturer that forces you to upgrade
your computer (which they made) OS (which they made) so you can copy
music to a product (and did I mention... which they also made.)

That's just wrong. There's nothing inherent to the iPod that would
prevent it from working with the immediate previous version of itunes.

Another solution would be to extend a virtual finger to Apple and
download a program called Sharepod (which is free) and toss itunes out
the window - this gem allows you to copy tunes/playlists etc to/from
ipod and itouch. Itunes to the PC is what real player was to the PC:
Intrusive, bloated and, well... not worth the hassle. :o)

Agreed. It's a stupid thing to suggest. People need to own devices that
suit their needs and/or educate themselves on how to achieve what they
need. Switching hardware is rarely the issue.

I totally agree. Most Apple products suck when used on Windows. Look at QT.
