Ok, So a "friend" of mine received an email staing that Rogers
received notification that stated this: Rogers Cable (Rogers) has
received a notice stating that activities associated with your IP
address are infringing copyright in material(s) owned or exclusively
licensed by others.

Can Rogers actually sue, or just disconnect the service?
Is it really illegal in Canada to DL copies of copywright materal? OR
is it because my "friend left the seed open for a bit and technically
was sharing it?
People do this every day without warning...How is it possible after
"trying" it out this person gets caught.
The material no longer sits on the network, which is what Rogers said
needed to be done.
How do people do this all day everyday without being caught?

If say one purchases a copy of the Movie/CD/Software is it illegal to
own a digital copy taken from another peer?

I've heard of others getting it, but have yet to hear of any action
being taken because of it.

I still buy dvds and have kept my subscription to the movie channels, so
AFAIAC, I have technically paid for the few movies I download.

That's true.

I'm thinking it's because they keep the seed open for a little while
overnight and technically were sharing it.

Any hints on how they not receive anymore emails like this?

One sure way is to switch to Aliant.

You're right on the seeding, thats what got you.....r friend. Rogers is
really afraid of people giving away stuff on their network. To answer
your first question: The best they can do is cut you off, not sue. They
don't own the property that was being seeded. I've seen people from both
Aliant and Rogers get these notices, but Aliant is a lot more tolerant.
You'd have to be seeding 24/7 at considerable bandwidth before they'd
bother. They don't want to cut you off, you represent easy money.

This happens to many people, and nothing will ever come of it. In my
case it was due to a roommate downloading episodes of Battlestar
Gallactica. Basically NBC contact Rogers, and Rogers just forwarded
the "complaint". I just deleted the email, and my roommate continued
what he was doing. I believe Rogers just forwards it along and washes
their hands of it

If that was the case, I'd long be cut off.
I've been seeding torrents 24/7 since I started
downloading them around 3 years ago.

Yeah, ISPs pass stuff on, and thats all. They need to look like they
care, or they'll catch crap from studios...so they send emails.

I figured as much I hear of people downlaoding all day long even with
the Cap (another story in itself.). Is there a way to stop seeding
after the DL is complete using Utorrent?

Thanks for everyones help.

It doesn't have to do with leaving it open. From what I've heard others
say, it's the particular file being downloaded, not the downloading
itself. I've left seeds open for months unend without a problem. But
I've seen people say "don't download this or that file cause you'll get
a notice from your ISP."

The only way to stop seeding is to remove the torrent from Utorrent.

Though, you've been seeding while downloading as well. But as I noted,
it's likely not the act of downloading that gets you the notice, but the
particular file that is being downloaded.

Or use some sort of third-party program to mask your IP address. I
haven't done this, but I know of people who have. I believe there is
one program called PeerGuardian, or something like that, if you're
really that worried about it.

Azureus and others can generally use IP Filters to not mask, but rather ignore
connection requests from known "industry" IP addresses... Peer Guardian does
the same thing... simple IP filtering at the application level.

If you use Azureus / Vuze, simply add this line in your config under IP Filters
/ Auto Loading:

http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/level1.gz

There are other IP lists out there... I use this one successfully...

Your mileage may vary.

If they're using uTorrent, I think the encrypting keeps Rogers from knowing
what you're downloading or uploading.
