Photographed a female Am Three-toed Woodpecker on Joe Batts Road this morning.
This woodpecker was in the same location where I seen one in 2017. I did see another the following year a few kilometers away but multiple visits over the intervening years came up empty. I thought the logging operations during 2018-19 might have forced them to relocate. It's now possible I might simply have missed them. It is a large area. Also possible, this individual might just be moving through.
I thought I heard a male drumming nearby but I later watched the female drumming. (I had thought that only males drummed?) So it's possible she was alone.
For those who may be interested in trying for the bird, take the gravel road on your right, 9 km pass the Irving restaurant/gas bar west of Gander. Drive about 15km on the dirt road (it's in good condition) and then walk down the short side road on your left. The woodpecker was seen/heard in the mature spruce on either side of this side road: N49.05557° W54.68714°
