I had two Northern Shrikes today, both young birds. One was in Cutler's Road on south side of Renews and the other was about 1 km west of Biscay Bay where there are patches of thick alders close to the highway. There were flocks of goldfinches in both areas and elsewhere along the PCS highway.
I also had a Red-winged Blackbird in PCS on Church Road.
There are numerous Red-throated Loons around now, several were feeding close to the Trepassey breakwater and two had the distinct red throats. Several Black-headed Gulls and two Bonaparte's were feeding nearby. There was also a Rose-breasted Grosbeak (male) at the recently re-filled feeder on Council Road.
Clara's garden in Renews continues to be a hot spot, and today she had no fewer than 5 Oriole's, at least one Rose-breasted Grosbeak, several Evening Grosbeaks, and a Scarlet Tanager.
