Sunday afternoon, May 24, Lorne Slaney, Steve Boone and I observed 11
Snow Geese off Indian Point in Labrador City. With them were two small
Canada Geese. After carefull study I announced that they were Cackling
Geese. This was based on several reasons, the bill seemed smaller or
stubbier, the head had a bit of a different shape and of course the
size was a lot smaller than normal Canada Geese. I had also seen and
photographed a Cackling Goose in NB a few years ago. Me being the
bigger of the three the decision was accepted as gospel.
Maxine Lewis later studied the bird for 30 minutes and agreed.
We sent pictures to a number of birders, most seemed to think that it
was quite possible that it was indeed a Cackling Goose. More and
better photographs were requested and information on other sightings,
if any, were also requested.
Today Lorne and I spent six hours trying to locate the bird but
without success. We did visit with Wabush Mines Security and asked
them to call if they had any sightings reported. One chap there said
he was called by a mine worker last week to come see four Canada Geese
that were only a little bigger than American Black Ducks. This was in
the mine proper not on the tailings.
Our call of Cackling Goose seems to be good..................
