See this TurboTax support FAQ on how to contact Support -
If the problem concerns any type of refund for fees, use the key words billing issues and do Not use the word Refund or you will get a phone number for tax refunds.

I have contacted customer support twice. The first person gave me the instructions for "clear and start over" which didn't work because I've already paid for Deluxe Online but I haven't filed yet. So when I try to clear and start over, it tells me it can't because I've already paid. So I called a second time. After being on the phone and hold for over 30 minutes, they tell me they can't cancel or refund, that I have to fill out a refund request form. So they email me the form. Except it won't LET me fill it out because it's to get a refund for TurboTax Download or CD! I need to cancel TurboTax Online AFTER I've paid, but before I've filed. And I'm getting NO WHERE!

I am having the same issue! Customer service is talking me in circles and keeps referring me to the refund request for the download/CD, which is not my problem because I submitted payment for TurboTax Deluxe Online! Would love some guidance on this issue.

Same, I've called customer service three times to no avail. Upon filing a refund request using the online form, I had received no update on my case via email and had to check said status using the same form, to which it said case closed. Was wondering what this means and how I should proceed.

We are not able to assist you with your TurboTax account in this public forum. Please reach back out to TurboTax Customer Support to discuss your options. Please visit the Contact Us page and select your product to get you to the right person.

Same thing, a screen saying to continue to wrap up your return, then no indication that you are about to be charged for "TurboTax Deluxe" and not having to say pay for your return if you owe. Then you are prompted with a payment form you fill it out, then it shows a lovely order summary of the subtotal, taxes, and order total AFTER you put in your info and pay.

It is blatantly unclear that this is about to charge you for a deluxe package rather than you entering in your information for your return. It's very anti-user, and scummy business practice, I'm so glad that instead of paying the mere 6$ I owed that now I had to pay 65$ additional for the Deluxe because of the unclear review and filing flow. Absolute garbage and it seems many others have had the same experience.

Garbage company, hope you go under

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2019 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

IRS Free File Program -
If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Free File Program which is free to file both a federal and state tax return. The Free File Program edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

And by the way, The Refund Processing Service charge is not to Efile or get Direct Deposit. And not to get your federal and state refunds together. It is so they can take the fees out of your refund. To do that your refund has to first go through the Turbo Tax bank to take the fees out. Then they send the rest to you.

I had a very basic return this year and the automated system (the same one which fails to inform you that you can only file your state taxes if you pay TurboTax AFTER finishing your state return) upgraded me to deluxe without my consent or knowledge. When it was time to check out, I had no other option to select.

If you advertise as free, there should be a way to use your product for free. Throw in all the predatory charges and hidden subscriptions (credit karma) you want, but don't falsely advertise a product that is impossible to qualify for.

Additionally, if you used one of the TurboTax online editions you were not required to pay for the online account fess until after you had completed the tax return and were in the File section of the program in Step 1. And only then after you had reviewed the amount being charged were you asked to pay with a credit or debit card or to have the TurboTax account fees paid from the federal tax refund.

Do you work for turbo tax??... And are you in any authority to refund the $79.99 I was charged for getting half of my forms filled out, NEVER filed, and was Charged... ??... Then please look up my acct ,and you will see, or I'll screenshot a receipt for what turbo tax charged me...$79.99. Thanks.

Oh and you should always assume when you enter your credit or debit card anywhere on the internet you will be charged right then. In Turbo Tax you can pay early before you are ready to file to lock in an early price before the prices go up (usually on March 1).

I got charged over 200 dollars when I only committed to a very limited version of turbo tax. My tax returns were only 607 now I am only get half of that because Turbo tax charged me 270. I am very upset.

@Chelscola If you used one of the TurboTax online editions you were not required to pay for the online account fess until after you had completed the tax return and were in the File section of the program in Step 1. And only then after you had reviewed the amount being charged were you asked to pay with a credit or debit card or to have the TurboTax account fees paid from the federal tax refund.

The TurboTax Free online edition is for very simple tax returns that do not require any other form or schedule other than the Form 1040. If your tax data requires entry on any other form or schedule then you must upgrade to the Deluxe edition or higher.

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2022 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

There are no additional services if you paid $98. Additional services, like LIve, would have cost another $100. The $98 is to prepare and file your taxes. It is not a hidden charge. You paid to prepare and file federal and state, plus sales tax.

For some reason you wanted to pay the $59 TurboTax account fee for the Deluxe edition with your federal tax refund. The refund processing fee for this option is $39 as was shown on the screen giving you the payment options.

Yeah, the really at NO point told me about the additional fee be added. I expected to pay for my state return but nothing else! The only form I had was for college, that's gross. Also, to wait to the VERY end of the filling process after I did all that work to tell me you are charging me an extra hundred is the DEFINITION of at best shady at worst a scam.

YEAH because WE ALL know what is on schedules 1-3and based on all the things they take the time to list INDIVIDUALLY above that, it leads one to assume that VERY BASIC things like the child tax credit and Educational expenses are not ANYWHERE in the same league.. LMFAO ....... They could very easily CLEARLY list what is associated with schedules 1-3, so the POOR people who they are taking advantage of would know ahead of time to use another service, BECAUSE after looking now, SCHEDULES 1-3 are all the POOR PEOPLE ones, you should all be ashamed!!! DOWN with corporations that treat us all like disposable waste

Apparently, TT thinks it's too much of a hassle to scrap everything even if you haven't paid them or even filed. This is a way to bind you so they can still get their money even if the tax version you used to figure out your taxes is no longer a benefit to you for the tax year you're filing.

With that being said, TT automatically upgrades you to their lowest edition (TT Deluxe I believe) if you don't qualify for the Federal/State Free edition. To get the free edition you have to have an AGI of $36k or lower, have qualified for the EIC, or are a veteran/active duty/military personnel.

Unfortunately, once you have submitted payment, deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or registered, you wouldn't be able to clear and start over. The only other option is to review your fees and try to reduce any fees that you have. Please follow the instructions below.

I agree that this is BS. I did my entire return in the free version and am doing the standard deduction. So, education deductions essentially don't matter, but apparently entering education expenses requires that you pay for the deluxe edition. So, even though nothing was actually done in the deluxe edition I have to start over completely in order to not pay my entire tax refund to turbo tax. It's total BS!!!

This does not work. I had to use Deluxe last year and now I cannot downgrade back to Free Basic even though I meet all of the requirements. Clear and Start Over does not clear my information and the product defaults to Deluxe.

If we detect that your tax situation requires expanded coverage, we'll prompt you to upgrade to a version that supports the forms you need so we can maximize your tax deductions and ensure you file an accurate return. For more details on this, please see the Help Article here.
