Black Butler (Japanese: 黒執事, Hepburn: Kuroshitsuji) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yana Toboso. It has been serialized in Square Enix's shōnen manga magazine Monthly GFantasy since September 2006. The series follows Ciel Phantomhive, the 12-year-old Earl of Phantomhive serving as the Queen's Watchdog. He is tasked with solving crimes in the underworld of Victorian-era London. Ciel has formed a contract with demon Sebastian Michaelis, who disguises himself as his butler, to seek revenge on those who tortured him and murdered his parents. In exchange for his services, Sebastian will be allowed to consume Ciel's soul.
In July 2008, it was announced that an anime adaptation of Black Butler, directed by Toshiya Shinohara and produced by A-1 Pictures. It premiered in October 2008 and broadcast on MBS as well as the TBS.[18][19][20] On January 1, 2009, a limited edition DVD containing the first episode was released by Aniplex.[21] The next three episodes were released on another DVD on February 25, 2009. On an event on June 14, 2009, it was announced that the anime would be returning for a second series. Japanese voice actor Junichi Suwabe confirmed this news on his official blog later that day.[22][23] The second series, Black Butler II, premiered in July and follows a butler, Claude Faustus, and his master, Alois Trancy, as well as Sebastian and Ciel. Both new characters were designed by Toboso.[24] Aniplex later released the complete Blu-ray and DVD on May 7, 2014.[25]
The Phantomhive family is a respected and distinguished house in Victorian London. Despite a mysterious fire killing off the previous Lord and Lady Phantomhive, their twelve-year-old (later thirteen) son Ciel Phantomhive has managed to rebuild the family legacy, creating a massive toy and candy company within just three years, and serving the Queen as a major contributor to England's black-ops.
A live-action movie starring Mizushima Hiro, Gouriki Ayame, and Shirota Yuu was released on January 18, 2014. Taking place 130 years after the events of the manga, in the year 2020, Western and Eastern cultures have blended and 17-year-old Shiori Genpo, a distant relative of Ciel, is the head of the Phantomhive/Genpo estate and Phantom/Funtom Corporation after her parents were mysteriously assassinated when she was a child and she was subsequently kidnapped. She disguises herself as "Kiyoharu Genpo" and, just like her relative before her, returns with a butler named Sebastian Michaelis at her side, whom she has contracted to help her obtain revenge in exchange for her soul. The movie follows Shiori as she is tasked by the Queen of the Western Nations to investigate a slew of serial mummification deaths, also referred to as "The Devil's Curse".
Grell's typical attire consists of a vest; gloves; a red-and white-striped bow around their neck; and red and black 4.33-inch (11-cm) high-heeled ankle boots. Grelle also sports a red coat they took from Angelina Dalles after fatally wounding her; they often wear it slung off their shoulders with the sleeves rolled up to their elbows.
Grell confronts Sebastian with their Death Scythe. They claim that their Death Scythe can slice through anything, and sadistically trifles with Sebastian, stating their desire to tear up his body. They add that they love the color red and enjoy using blood to do makeup for ugly women. Sebastian points out Grell's violation of the Grim Reaper rules and deems their butler principles sickening, and Grell remarks that even so they are still the "butler of death." Their battle continues, and Grell inflicts a small slash on Sebastian's left arm, revealing a brief Cinematic Record of Sebastian's past and his first encounter with Ciel. Grell explains the general purpose of a Cinematic Record, which is to replay memories for assessment by the Grim Reaper, and Sebastian dismisses it as a "spying activity."
Grell turns to leave, and Ciel orders Sebastian to kill them. While battling, Sebastian intentionally aims for Grell's face, much to their anger for they greatly cherish it. Grell asks if Sebastian is afraid to perish once he is critically hit by their Death Scythe, and the latter asserts that he is not. Grell states that a demon and a Grim Reaper are unable to reach a mutual understanding; thus, their relationship is like the "tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet." Grelle rams their own forehead against Sebastian's and deals a strong, upward slash across his chest. Much to their dismay, they perceive a rather mundane Cinematic Record which consists simply of Sebastian's daily life as a Phantomhive butler.
During their battle, Undertaker recalls that Grell was Madam Red's butler and remarks that they also tampered with people's lives. Grell calls him nosy and assures him that they are not going to leave, albeit the time constraints. Grell is about to take a swing at Undertaker, but Sebastian hurls a beaten Ronald at them, making them both crash into a wall. As Campania sinks and water floods the area they are fighting in, Undertaker tells them that he must go. Grell and Sebastian make a concerted attack on him, causing him to drop his chain of lockets, which Ciel catches. Undertaker entrusts it to Ciel, splits the ship into two with his Death Scythe, and escapes.

In an effort to escape being a child sacrifice for the cult, Ciel makes a pact with a demon: Ciel will forfeit his soul to the demon in exchange for the demon's servitude until Ciel gets revenge on whoever murdered his family. This demon ends up becoming Ciel's butler Sebastian who helps the young Earl with his duties as the lord of the Phantomhive house.
