I'm trying to create a translucent help overlay to be displayed over my activity's main screen when the user first opens the app. I would like to highlight a button contained in the main layout (and inflated using setContentView), by "cutting out" a section of the overlay which corresponds to the position of the button, and make the cutout transparent.
The above code doesn't actually show anything, just the translucent layout with no circle cutout. I assume this is because it's just drawing a transparent circle over top of the translucent layout. I'm really struggling to accomplish this, any suggestions would be appreciated!
I have figured it out myself at last. For those interested this is how you extend your screen into the cutout area:

All the samples out there mention the 1st line, but you need both lines for this to work.

A display cutout (or notch) is an area on some devices that extends into the display surface to allow for an edge-to-edge experience while providing space for important sensors on the front of the device.
When dealing with display cutouts the display mode and layout mode affect greatly how the cutouts affect your application. So it's important that you have set the display mode before attempting to deal with cutouts. The information returned here will change based on the display mode.
For example in portrait, cutout.safeInsetTop will represent the height of any cutout at the top of the device. This will account not only for notches but also some devices with curved corners and the iOS controls bar.
Hi, aluziliu-4133. On Android, the layoutInDisplayCutoutMode window layout attribute controls how the app's content is drawn in the cutout area. The default setting is LAYOUT_IN_DISPLAY_CUTOUT_MODE_DEFAULT which supports to make content renders into the cutout area when displayed in portrait mode. I created a basic Shell application, the view is shown as expected on Android device with cutout area. The test emulator is Pixel 3L, please test your project on the device to check the issue.
A client of mine commissioned an avatar which he also wanted to work on quest, there is a problem though, none of the avatar shaders have cutout rendering mode which makes the textures on certain areas to appear black, is there a solution either by editing the textures or any options in the shaders?
