Summon Night: Swordcraft Story progresses through the story on a day-by-day basis. The entire game consists of 10 days, where the player traverses through the town of Wystern and the Labyrinth Dungeon. Each day, more levels of the Labyrinth are unlocked and the player is required to travel deeper to complete mandatory quests. A day normally ends after a tournament or boss battle. During the night, the player can choose whom to spend the night with, which will control the following cutscene. There is a unique cutscene at the end of the game, depending on which character the player spent the most time with in the nighttime sections.
Battles in Summon Night take place inside dungeons. They are initiated as random encounters. On the battle scene, the player will be placed into a small side-scrolling area with one to four opponents. They are able to walk, run, jump, guard, attack, summon their guardian beast and use items. Up to three weapons can be equipped, and up to four different items and spells can be placed onto the guardian beast. This must be set up before a battle begins. If no weapon is available or equipped, the player will be forced to battle with a hammer. During the battle, the player can switch freely between their equipped weapons and use any of the selected items and spells. A battle is won when all opponents have either fled or have been defeated. The main dungeon of the game, The Labyrinth, has fifty floors the player will be required to traverse across the length of the game. After completing the game's main story, the player will unlock an additional fifty floor to explore, featuring new materials to craft with, and new versions of previously fought enemies and bosses.
So the gba one of the best consoles known to man, A seemingly endless catalog of all sorts of games but, I want to focus on the jrpg aspect, specifically one game called summon night swordcraft story. Now a lot of people might not know what summon night is so let me explain it to you. Summon night was originally a strategy jrpg with monsters as your companions, similar to pokemon but you only have one powerful legendary pokemon and you also fight, now Summon night was not released in America till 2015 but there was one game that released outside Japan before the true summon night games. Summon night swordcraft story. So I get it The name is generic as generic as can be. But putting that aside it's one of the best rpg of the gba in my personal opinion. Now a lot of jrpgs had one problem it was turn base. But some of them were also fighting games but not so inivative. Something like final fantasy, sure it was a great game with great story but the rpg fights were annoying as hell. Cmon Can't i just run away or avoid all the monsters. So I'm off topic now let's talk about summon night. The main BIG thing about swordcraft story is its fights. You wanna know what they did to make it good. IT ISN'T A TURN Base! Now alot of people enjoy the turn base aspect of rpgs me too since I'm a huge fan of pokemon. The. Main thing about the turn based system is it requires some strategic effort. So a lot of people might suspect that swordcraft story is a mindless button masher. But are they mistaken. The amount of weapons, spells, equips, and upgrades makes ton amount of strategy. Well yes some rpgs have more shit than swordcraft story. But since the game gives you free movement and multiple ways to tackle a battle it stands on par to some of big strategic rpgs like final fantasy or fire emblem. Also there another about this game. Running away is fast and efficient. You run away by moving to the screen Which is huge step forward to the awful menu hopping to run. Also You can effect how you run away. For example final fantasy has a percentage on how likely you are to run away. But in swordcraft story you can affect that percentage. It's always a 100% guarantee escape but the enemies can damage you to stop you running away. But you can just avoid them and got to the other side of the screen to run away. There are alot more shit that I want to talk about how they made crafting actually fun how they made a lot of funny dialog but i can't come up with more words to fill the 1000 words sa goal. So just play the goddamn game it needs more attention so that more people can appreciate this master piece.
