Hi kalai,

Reading your NEN; really interesting and bringing back my school days.
I wanted to share with you the games my son (grade-V ) had for his
recent vacation..To keep him away from being glued to the TV and the
net, we had a team of kids from our apartments. They will all assemble
in our home in the morning and each day they played games like
pallanguzhi, (the board we got from a temple trip; the beads we
outsourced from a japa mala purchased in north india!!); still trying
to get the original 'gundumani'; thaayaakattam- we have 'othai
kattam','rettai kattam', aeroplane kattam', mini 'thayakattam'- I
prepared each of them with sketches on a paper and stuck on a
thermacoal so they found it easy to play with. And we got 'chozhi'
during another trip and now they have learnt to play ' 'chozhi' game
also. Instead of video games and cartoons which instil restlessness
and tension, our traditional games improve good mathematical skills,
hand-to-eye coordination, ideas and creativity, and really the kids
loved playing this - they themselves reduced their 'computer time' and
wanted more of these! Happy to share feelings with like-minded
people!! Thanks to NIla!!

Bye

Hema,

Your ideas are really amazing and interesting. Through this the kids
might have come to know about our traditional games. The way you've
explained its clear that both you (who made them with lots of
creativity) and kids enjoyed well. I'm new to 'othai kattam','rettai
kattam', 'aeroplane kattam'. Would you interested in sharing the pics
of these games? Through which ur creativity will be know to others and
which might help other moms for their kids. Would you be interested in
joining with me in creating the instruction document with
illustrations for these games since you've created traditional games
in a modern way and made the kids to play with them? Even I would like
to learn those game after reading reading your post.

Dear Hema,

Thank u for your feedback about my NEN.  Very interesting to know your ideas to engage the kids in traditional games which'll definitely improve their creativity. I also appreciate your efforts in collecting the beads from jabamala (vallavanukku pullum aayutham!)  and chozhi for the games.
Very glad to know that your kids love playing these games and thanks for sharing good ideas with us.

Kalai.

HM,

It is a very good start. The instruction is looking good. The picture what you've sent is also fine. Actually compared to diagrams, the pictures (i.e photos) will be more attractive. I've already started looking on get the 'Paramapadham, Dhaayakkattam & Pallanguzhi'. I'm not sure if I could get it like old days. But still I would like to have whichever is available. I think if we can have the photos of what you've created for your kid which in a way will show ur creativeness to others and also it'll give an added value for the instructions.

Dear Yash,

I've given below one blog address which'll be very useful for u to design the games.

Adu puli aattam(ஆடு புலி ஆட்டம்) is a very interesting game and we have played this game also.  You can include this game also.
