Subject: Notice from BAM

Dear members,

We have just been issued with notice from BAM for leaving the building. They have recently appointed a new Director of Services who is pushing forward developments in Cork City. This means we will need to vacate Sullivan’s Quay by the end of 2016.

Kim, Pádraig and I are meeting with the City Council on Wednesday to present our needs for a new building. We hope to get their support in relocating to a more permanent home.

It is unlikely we will find another building large enough to house all the studio members and our programmes. However, I am confident that in the next six months, we will find a new venue and irrespective of size, continue on with Sample-Studios and our activities. Should we be split over a number of venues, it will not detract from the main aim of our organisation, which is to provide affordable workspaces for creative practitioners and to support contemporary arts practices in the city.

While we have always expected this day to come, it is still a sad moment now that we have been issued a date for moving. We have had five great years, and in that time have sown the seeds for a strong organisational structure. While we face uncertainty over our next venue, what is certain is that we will press on with our activities over the next six months and have a lot of work to do within that timeframe.

I would like to call a members meeting at the Auditorium this Thursday 21 July at 5pm to discuss this together with everyone and to put in place an action plan for what happens next. This will look at:
  • Finding our new venue: what efforts have been made so far and what else can be done
  • Fundraising and financial planning for the move
  • Rallying public support
  • Planning for the process of vacating the building
  • What this means for members.

We will really need everyone’s support over the next six months. I hope everyone will remain positive in light of this news, and help out as much as possible with our plans for the future. I am going to do everything I can to find a new home for everybody and get the support of the City Council, the public, the media, other arts organisations, businesses, institutions and others along the way. I hope you will all do the same!

Aideen
