In the original Resident Evil, a slide filter can be found lying on the ground. The computer can be used to open the electronic locks in some areas including the Image preparation room and Researcher's private room. This however requires a login and a password, which are JOHN (Login) and MOLE (Password).

In the remake, the computer here can be used to unlock the electronic locks on two areas; Image preparation room and Researcher's private room. To log in however will require a login and password, JOHN (Login) and ADA (Password). To unlock the electronic lock for the Image preparation room, enter CELL as the password.

Head back out into the central square and into the double doors on the upper-northeast corner of the square. In this room, you'll find the V-ACT Researcher's Note, a battery pack, and a First Aid Kit. Access the computer and login as JOHN with the password ADA. Unlock the door on B3F, and then you'll need another password in order to unlock the Visual Data Room, which we just wound out was "CELL." Once you've unlocked the doors, log off and head back to the central square area and back to the hallway with the X-Ray room.

So I'm planning on going for the speedrun on new game + normal difficulty and I have one question. I've been hearing that if you do not watch the 'Happy Birthday' video tape and enter the code 1408 into the passcode machine in Lucas' den, it is rejected and the password is then reset. I'm wondering if the password is completely randomly generated or is a specific code out of a limited range of potentially correct passwords. What different potential codes have been found so far? And if compiled, perhaps speedrunners could save time by going through and inputing every different possible password known instead of performing the puzzles.

You need to acquire the username and the two passwords that the computer in the small lab requires you enter to unlock these doors. All of these can be obtained in one room of the underground laboratory, the x-ray room.

Dear Ada,
...
If everything is in order, all the locks can be opened by the security system. You can access the system if you log in with my name from the terminal in the small lab and enter the password. The password is your name.
...
Yours, John

In some cases, there can be more than 1 possible password or codes for certain locks. These codes can be completely random or is picked from a pool of codes. Players may need to try multiple codes or find the clue to know which passwords to use.

I'm playing through Lost in Nightmares for the first time and I'm stuck. I have passwords 1 & 3 and the heat sensitive paper, but I can't find password 2. I've looked through every open room at least 3 times now. Help me please:confused:

Continue up and go through the short hall. The next room contains Supplements and a Chem Fluid, while on the burnt corpse the Memo on Burnt Corpse file is attached, with a password: 1408. Go through the door and inspect the lower shelf in the corner right in front of you to find an Antique Coin.

Since you don't want to die (and you know what happened in the 'Happy Birthday' video), you'll want to do things slightly differently this time. Grab the candle, burn the rope on the door to the far north, enter the 'LOSER' password on the locked door there, grab the valve, then use this on the pipe opposite to the birthday cake. You can now light the candle at the kitchen and stick it in the cake. It'll go off, and a bomb will be dropped. Quickly pull the plank away from the wall and put the bomb inside, then keep your distance. This allows you to go through the wall.

Lucas is here. He suggests three different passwords: 0814, 0621 and 0514. Enter one and you'll quickly learn he's messing with you - back up from the door! A giant battering ram will smash where you were just standing. There is a newly open door on the right, though. Time to track down the real deal: head on through.

You could use one-time passwords. That would defeat any attempt to simply read the password and store/transmit it for later use. Getting around that would require hardware changes or some kind of resident hypervisor to gain access to the new password.
This obviously assumes that the current password can't be used to gain access to a more permanent key. The permanent key could be made so bulky that it can't be stored in the MBR, and that getting it off the system by other means would take a noticeable amount of time. Or you could re-encrypt the entire disk with the new password every time, and not have a permanent key...
You could also make the encryption hardware external to the main system, and never expose the permanent key to the computer itself at all. That eliminates the need to re-encrypt, but the device has to be tamper-proof (or you have to carry it around all the time). Good built-in drive encryption would qualify, but only if you can change the password of an unlocked drive without clearing it.

If you enter your one-time password on a subverted system, the attacker suddenly has access to all your data. He only needs access once.
> Or you could re-encrypt the entire disk
Not if your system is subverted. Sure, it would appear to you that everything is being re-encrypted, but in reality the back door the maid slipped will be used to copy everything the next time you leave your computer behind. (this is just one scenario, the attacker could also weaken the encryption algo, ship your data out over the network, etc etc)
> You could also make the encryption hardware external to the main system
Perhaps, but this doesn't exist today and sounds awfully expensive to develop.
