Plot summary
The film chronicles the early part of the life of Emperor Asoka. It begins with his career as a General in Takshashila and ends with the bloody conquest of the Kalinga. Emperor Chandragupta Maurya, grandfather of Asoka, of the Maurya empire, has decided to embrace Jainism and abdicate the throne of the empire in favour of his son Bindusara. But his grandson, Prince Asoka, claims his sword. The old emperor explains that this sword is evil, and the sword demands blood and destruction.
A few years later, Prince Asoka, now a brave youth, is battling the rebellious chief of Taxila for his Emperor and father. He figures that his elder half-brother Susima Maurya, who also has an eye on the throne of the empire, has deliberately withheld reinforcements from arriving, but defeats the enemy nevertheless. Asoka returns to the capital victorious and confronts Susima. Later, Susima tries to assassinate Asoka while he is bathing. The fight among the princes makes the Emperor unhappy, and he orders Empress Dharma to control her son Asoka. She compels Asoka to temporarily leave the capital to lead the life of a common person. The Prince is disappointed but leaves nonetheless.
Asoka, alone and disguised as an ordinary traveller, rides to the south. He meets a lovely maiden Kaurwaki and falls in love with her. He also develops a good relation with her little brother Arya. Kaurwaki and Arya are refugees from Kalinga, who fled from their kingdom when it was attacked by Susima's army. Their parents had arranged for Kaurwaki to marry Prince Aryan of Kalinga (Ajith Kumar), but they were separated during the attack. Asoka does not reveal his true identity and introduces himself as Pawan, a traveller.
Meanwhile, Susima and his brothers are busy plotting against Asoka. They plan to announce him dead and make Bindusara renounce his throne in favour of Susima. However, their plan fails when they are informed that Asoka is alive and well in Kalinga. They then send a group of assassins to kill him at his place of stay.
The assassins attack Asoka's residence while he is away looking for a gift for Kaurwaki. They kill everyone present there except Arya who escapes with his horse. Arya is chased by an assassin and wounded by an arrow before he falls into a river. Asoka arrives at his place only to find it burning and his beloved gone. He assumes that Kaurwaki is dead and Arya has been kidnapped by Susima's men.
Asoka becomes enraged and returns to Pataliputra with a vow to kill Susima and his brothers. He confronts Bindusara who reveals that he knows about his love for Kaurwaki and asks him to forget her and focus on his duty as a prince. Asoka refuses to listen and storms out of the palace. He then meets his mother who tells him that she has arranged for him to marry Devi (Hrishitaa Bhatt), a Buddhist girl from Vidisha. Asoka reluctantly agrees to the marriage, hoping that it will please his father and end the feud among the brothers.
Asoka marries Devi and becomes a father to Mahendra and Sanghamitra. However, he is still haunted by the memories of Kaurwaki and Arya. He also learns that Susima has been appointed as the viceroy of Ujjain, where he is oppressing the people and plotting against Asoka. Asoka decides to go to Ujjain and stop Susima's tyranny. He leaves his family under the protection of his loyal general Bheema (Danny Denzongpa).
Asoka arrives in Ujjain and challenges Susima to a fight. He defeats him and spares his life, hoping that he will reform. He then announces that he will be the new viceroy of Ujjain and invites the people to join him in building a peaceful and prosperous kingdom. He also meets a Buddhist monk who tells him about the teachings of Buddha and the path of non-violence.
Meanwhile, Kaurwaki, who survived the attack on Asoka's residence, has been reunited with Aryan, who is now the king of Kalinga. They are preparing for a war against Magadha, as they believe that Asoka is responsible for the death of Kaurwaki's family and Arya's disappearance. They are unaware that Arya is alive and has been adopted by a Buddhist monk who found him floating in the river.
Asoka hears about the impending war with Kalinga and decides to lead his army there. He hopes to find Kaurwaki and Arya and make peace with them. However, he is shocked to see Kaurwaki on the battlefield as the queen of Kalinga and Aryan as her husband. He tries to talk to her but she does not recognize him as Pawan and accuses him of being a murderer and a traitor.
A fierce battle ensues between the two armies, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. Asoka fights with Aryan and kills him, while Kaurwaki is wounded by an arrow. Asoka rushes to her side and reveals his true identity as Pawan. He begs for her forgiveness and tells her that he loves her. Kaurwaki dies in his arms, saying that she loves him too.
Asoka is devastated by the loss of his love and becomes remorseful for the carnage he has caused. He sees Arya among the survivors and embraces him as his brother. He then renounces violence and embraces Buddhism as his faith. He vows to spread the message of peace and compassion throughout the world.
